The minors lived among garbage and without contact with the outside world. Spanish Justice condemned Christian Steffen and Melissa Ann Steffen for psychological violence and family abandonment after discovering the serious physical and emotional consequences suffered by the children.

The Spanish judicial system has put an end to one of the darkest episodes of the post-pandemic. A court in northern Spain has sentenced a couple of prison to a pair of foreigners who, blinded by an unjustifiable health fanaticism, kept their three children in a regime of absolute confinement for almost four years.

What began as a supposed protective measure against Covid-19 ended up being a scenario of habitual psychological violence and family abandonment, where the mental health of the parents became the physical prison of three innocents.

The perpetrators of this outrage are Christian Steffen, a 53-year-old German tech recruiter, and his wife Melissa Ann Steffen, a 48-year-old American naturalized German. The couple, who settled in a rented house in Oviedo at the end of 2021, has been sentenced to two years and four months in prison for psychological violence, plus an additional six months for family abandonment.

Additionally, they have been stripped of parental authority for a period of three years and four months, prohibited from approaching their children within 300 meters, and must pay a compensation of 30,000 euros to each minor for the irreparable damage caused.

The cruelty of the confinement, which lasted from December 2021 until the police rescue on April 28, 2025, transformed the home into a nightmarish environment. Prosecutors were emphatic in describing how the parents “locked the minors in their house and completely isolated them from the rest of the world, denying them contact with other people both physically and through other forms of communication”.

The disconnection from reality was such that, according to the prosecutor's report, “the children did not even know their relatives or anyone else who was not their parents”.

The details of the daily life of these three minors—a ten-year-old boy and eight-year-old twins—are chilling and reveal criminal negligence disguised as care:

Unhealthy conditions: The police found the home filled with garbage, dirty diapers, pads, and used tampons, with countertops covered in animal feces.

Physical consequences: Due to confinement and living in beds and cribs that were too small, the children exhibited bowed legs, hunched posture, difficulties walking, and skin irritation.

Developmental atrophy: The eight-year-old twins did not know how to read or write. They had not seen a doctor since 2019 and suffered from onychomycosis and lack of bowel control due to prolonged use of diapers.

Psychological trauma: Investigators found disturbing drawings in the cribs depicting “monsters with sharp teeth drawn in red ink”. Upon being rescued, one of the children knelt on the grass and “touched it in amazement”, unable to comprehend nature after years of deprivation.

The defense of the Steffens, in an attempt to justify the unjustifiable, described this atrocity as a "voluntary isolation" stemming from an "overwhelming fear" after having contracted the virus previously. However, the court rejected the thesis that they were simply "wrong decisions, but not criminal", confirming that the well-being of the minors was sacrificed to the parents' paranoia.

The freedom of these children is due to the intervention of a neighbor, Silvia, who, with exemplary civic diligence, acted as a “forensic detective”.

Noticing that the blinds were never opened and that the supermarket purchases included large amounts of diapers during school hours, Silvia kept a detailed diary that she submitted to the authorities on April 14. According to municipal sources, “the shopping list was the key that triggered everything”.

Currently, the minors are under the care of social services, while experts like Minister Marta del Arco warn that the trauma resulting from this "social dystocia" is profound and will require years of intense therapy. This case from Oviedo stands as a brutal reminder of how obsession and fear, when not tempered by responsibility and common sense, can turn the family core into the most dangerous of cults.
