The Government confronted the University of Mar del Plata over the attacks on libertarian students and demanded sanctions

The Government of Javier Milei expressed its stance on the episodes of violence and discrimination against libertarian students at the National University of Mar del Plata (UNMDP) and demanded that the institution's authorities take measures to ensure the safety and freedom of expression of all.

The response was disseminated by the Undersecretary of University Policies of the Nation, Alejandro Álvarez, who posted a message on his X account indicating that he acted on the express instruction of the Minister of Human Capital, Sandra Pettovello.

“In light of the repeated acts of violence and discrimination at the National University of Mar del Plata, by express instruction of the minister [Sandra Pettovello], we insist on demanding that the rector, Mónica Biasone, take responsibility and put an end to the violence. If she cannot do so, she should request assistance from the security forces. Continuing with her passive attitude is complicity with the violent,” wrote Álvarez.

The official shared a note sent to the university, in which he questioned the hate speech made during a University Assembly against students who hold different political ideas.

“I am addressing you because I have become aware, through digital media, of the aggressive statements made during a University Assembly of that Educational Institution by a supposed teacher - a militant of a socialist political group against those students who have other political ideas, disqualifying them as 'fascists' and inciting violence against them to exclude them from participating in university activities,” expressed the undersecretary.

In the same presentation, Álvarez described these behaviors as incompatible with democratic coexistence that university institutions must guarantee.

In this regard, he stated: “These totalitarian behaviors violate the democratic coexistence that university institutions must guarantee in accordance with Articles 29, 31, and 33 of the Higher Education Law No. 24.521.”

Furthermore, he argued that the reported actions “are liable to be classified as discriminatory acts for ideological reasons under the provisions of Law No. 23.592.”

The official pointed directly at the highest authority of the university and emphasized that such situations cannot be allowed from the leadership of the institution. “Therefore, these actions cannot be permitted from her position as Rector and highest authority of the National University of Mar del Plata,” he noted.

Álvarez also recalled that previous episodes of physical and verbal aggression against students from a university group expressing their political ideas within the institution had been recorded.

In light of this scenario, the Milei Government demanded that the university take concrete measures. “I urge you to take responsibility and implement the necessary disciplinary measures to ensure the physical safety of students, the free expression of political ideas, compliance with the law, and the defense of constitutional rights,” stated the undersecretary.

Finally, the Undersecretary of University Policies requested that the university report on the administrative actions, disciplinary measures, and sanctions taken in response to the reported episodes.

In this way, the Milei Government came out in defense of the assaulted students and highlighted the need to guarantee coexistence, safety, and the possibility of freely expressing their political ideas within the institution
