Trump recalled the Falklands War and questioned the situation of the United Kingdom in response to a question about the Argentine claim

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has once again found himself at the center of the diplomatic dispute over the Falkland Islands after responding to a question from a British journalist about the Argentine claim and the possibility of Washington coming to the defense of the United Kingdom.

During the exchange, the journalist expressed his concern to Trump about the situation of the Falkland Islands and recalled that the Argentine president, Javier Milei, is preparing a message regarding the issue. He also asked whether the United States would assist the United Kingdom in the event of an Argentine claim over the archipelago.

Trump's response did not imply a military commitment or an explicit acknowledgment of the Argentine position, but it did highlight the review that Washington is conducting regarding its historical stance on the islands.

Trump recalled the Falklands War

In response to the journalist's question, Trump began by recalling the conflict of 1982 and his particular following of that war.

“I was there when they had the first war. That was a long time ago and I watched it very closely”, the U.S. president stated.

Trump also highlighted the British performance during the conflict and asserted that the United Kingdom recovered the islands “with quite a bit of force.” However, he immediately shifted the focus to the geographical distance separating the archipelago from British territory.

“It's a long way. That's a big trip. It's a long way”, the U.S. president affirmed.

This reference is particularly relevant because it occurred at a time when the Trump administration is keeping open the possibility of reviewing the United States' position regarding the sovereignty of the Falklands.

Trump criticized the United Kingdom

In the final part of his response, Trump made a particularly significant remark about the British situation. “So your country is not doing well”, the U.S. president stated in reference to the United Kingdom.

The comment came immediately after emphasizing the enormous distance between Great Britain and the islands, in a context of increasing pressure from Washington on its European allies to boost their defense spending.

In the last part of his message, Trump recalled the lack of support from the United Kingdom during the military operation against Iran and suggested that he would not help the British if Argentina were to reclaim the islands.

"Don't forget that you get a large percentage of your oil from the Strait of Hormuz and they weren't there to help me", he concluded.

Trump's statement adds to another declaration made days earlier at the White House. When specifically asked whether the United States was reviewing its position on the Falklands, the president replied: “I always review all positions. That is just one among many”.

Although Trump did not announce a concrete change, the possibility of modifying the U.S. stance represents a significant move given that Washington has historically maintained a position of formal neutrality on the dispute since the 1982 war. Reuters noted that a potential modification had been considered among various alternatives to exert pressure on NATO allies.

Milei prepares a new diplomatic offensive for the Falklands

Trump's statements come as Javier Milei deepens the Argentine claim for sovereignty over the Falkland Islands.

The Argentine president recently described the Falklands issue as “the most important and sacred cause” for Argentines and anticipated that the government would analyze the international situation related to the archipelago.

Milei also maintains that the recovery of the islands should be achieved through diplomatic means, without resorting to a military solution. The Argentine government interpreted Trump's recent statements as a significant signal within Buenos Aires' international strategy.

The British reaction, on the other hand, was decisive. London reaffirmed its position on the islands and stated that the inhabitants of the archipelago expressed their desire to continue being a British overseas territory.

Thus, the Falklands issue once again occupies a central place on the international agenda. Trump has not yet announced a formal change in U.S. policy, but his statements and the possibility of reviewing Washington's position open a diplomatic scenario that could have consequences for the historic dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom.

For Milei, the rapprochement with Trump also represents an opportunity to strengthen the Argentine claim in an international context where the United States could move away from part of the stance maintained over the last few decades.
