The future of Emiliano “Dibu” Martínez at Aston Villa is shrouded in uncertainty. The recent signing of Zion Suzuki, the Japanese national team goalkeeper who arrived from Parma, has raised questions about the Argentine's place in the squad for the upcoming season.

Aston Villa finalized the arrival of Suzuki for a fee close to 35 million euros, including the fixed amount and variables. The Japanese goalkeeper was signed with the expectation of competing for the starting position, in a context where Martínez's continuity was already under review.

What will happen with “Dibu” Martínez?

The situation of the Argentine goalkeeper was also linked to Juventus, which showed interest in signing him during the transfer window. However, the negotiations did not progress and the Italian club ended up distancing itself from the operation.

The landscape changed even more with Suzuki's arrival in Birmingham. The move was interpreted as a sign that Aston Villa began to prepare different alternatives for their goal in anticipation of a potential departure of the world champion.

Nonetheless, the arrival of Suzuki does not necessarily mean that Martínez will immediately leave Aston Villa. The Argentine still belongs to the club and there are conflicting reports regarding his future. Some reports even suggest that the Japanese could initially compete for the position instead of automatically replacing the Argentine.

An unexpected scenario for the world champion

Martínez has become one of the standout figures of Aston Villa since his arrival at the club in 2020 and has solidified his international reputation there, especially after his performances with the Argentine National Team.

Now, at 33 years old, the goalkeeper is facing an unprecedented situation since becoming a key player for the English team: his continuity is no longer guaranteed and the transfer market could determine his next destination.

With Zion Suzuki already signed and the possibility of a new proposal for Martínez arising, Aston Villa will have to decide whether to keep the Argentine as one of their main figures or to make a change in goal.
