The leftist British government came out to lament the statements made by Donald Trump after the President of the United States claimed he is “reviewing” his position regarding the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands.

From London, they confirmed that there has been "no change" in their stance and emphasized that the inhabitants of the archipelago are "British" and have the right to "decide their future".

On Monday, Trump was asked whether the United States was reconsidering its position on the territory illegally occupied by the United Kingdom and claimed by Argentina. “I always review positions, and that is one of them,” the U.S. president replied.

The statement generated strong anger in the British government. The official spokesperson for Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated: “In the summer, we established our position very clearly, and that has not changed. The islanders of the Falklands are British, with the right to determine their own future. They have expressed their desire to remain a British Overseas Territory, and our commitment to them is unbreakable.”

John Healey, the British Secretary of State for Defence, also spoke out, being emphatic regarding the sovereignty of the archipelago: “They are British and will remain British,” he said.

Regarding the official reaction to Trump's words in Argentina, President Javier Milei stated this Tuesday that something “very strong” had occurred concerning the Falklands issue, while announcing that on Thursday he would speak in a national broadcast to discuss the advances in the sovereignty claim.

Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno also addressed the issue and emphasized that the resolution of the dispute must be achieved through “diplomatic” means. Additionally, he raised the need for “more concrete actions” regarding the Falkland Islands and asserted that the “obligation is to maintain the claim.”

Background

The most recent precedent of a possible change in the U.S. position dates back to late April when a Pentagon email was leaked through Reuters.

The content, published on April 24, indicated that within the Trump administration, there was an evaluation to review the U.S. diplomatic position on European territories considered “imperial possessions,” with a specific reference to the Falklands.

This proposal had emerged in a context of tension between Trump and then British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, as well as with other NATO countries, due to their lack of support for U.S. and Israeli military actions against the terrorist regime of Iran.

The possibility of using the Falklands issue as a pressure instrument on London was thus established in the diplomatic arena.

Amid these tensions, Yahir Netanyahu, son of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, joined the dispute and again posted on social media this Monday a message stating that the Falkland Islands belong to Argentina.

He had previously made a similar statement in a context of diplomatic tensions between London and Israel over British positions regarding Gaza and the Middle East.
