The last day of the English transfer market once again had Enzo Fernández at the center of attention. Just three years after making the leap to European football, the midfielder of the Argentine National Team starred in another multimillion-dollar transfer: he left Chelsea and became a new player for Manchester City.

According to specialized journalist Fabrizio Romano, the deal was closed in the last hours of Tuesday for an amount close to 145 million euros. The 25-year-old Argentine will sign a six-season contract, until 2032, and will join a team that is looking to strengthen its midfield after the departure of important players and considers him a key addition to Enzo Maresca's project.

Fernández had already been waiting for a decision about his future. In fact, he was not called up by Xabi Alonso for Chelsea's last commitments, against Luton Town in the Carabao Cup and Brighton in the Premier League, while the clubs were advancing in negotiations.

The magnitude of the operation once again places the former River player among the most important transfers in history. The 145 million euros make his arrival at City one of the most expensive transfers of all time and, according to the reference list, it ranks him among the highest-value operations alongside Alexander Isak's move to Liverpool.

Beyond the global ranking, Fernández has once again broken his own record. In January 2023, Chelsea paid 121 million euros to Benfica to secure his services, an amount that at that time made the Argentine the most expensive player in Premier League history.

Now, his third international transfer also represents a new income for River, the club where he was trained. According to various estimates released about FIFA's solidarity mechanism, the Núñez institution will receive a percentage of the operation, with an amount that would range, depending on the final numbers, between 5.7 and 6.3 million euros.

Fernández's journey thus takes on extraordinary dimensions for a player who is still 25 years old. His transfers from River to Benfica, from Benfica to Chelsea, and now from Chelsea to Manchester City have mobilized, in total, nearly 284 million euros.

In this way, Enzo Fernández will seek to establish himself as one of the central pieces of one of the major contenders in English football and will once again star in a transfer that keeps him, once again, among the prominent names in the European market.

The numbers of Enzo Fernández at Chelsea

In his 3 and a half years with the London club, the native of San Martín played 13,400 minutes, distributed over 170 matches, in which he scored 31 goals, provided 30 assists, and received 37 yellow cards. In terms of titles, he won 2: the 2024/25 Conference League and the 2025 Club World Cup.
