The European Union is projecting its lowest corn production in nearly two decades, and the United States is facing the worst scenario for wheat in decades
For this reason, various estimates place total U.S. wheat production among the lowest in recent decades. Depending on the timing of the report, some projections even consider it the worst since 1965 or 1972.
In contrast to this international scenario, Argentina appears with especially favorable prospects for its main crops. The 2026/27 campaign could once again become historic, with the possibility of achieving the largest corn and wheat harvest in the country's history.
The figures for the 2025/26 campaign already demonstrated Argentina's productive potential. In the case of corn, estimates ranged between 64 and 70.5 million tons. The Rosario Stock Exchange raised its estimate to 70.5 million tons, representing a historic record.
Wheat also closed an exceptional campaign. Production was around 27-28 million tons, also at record levels for the country.
On this basis, the prospects for the 2026/27 campaign are again positive. Argentina could not only consolidate the levels achieved during the previous campaign but also move towards new production highs in both corn and wheat.
Thus, while projections for Europe and the United States show a significant reduction in their harvests, Argentina has an opportunity to expand its agricultural production, reach new historical records, and conquer new markets.
The international agricultural scenario shows a strong difference between the evolution of the harvests in the main producing regions and the prospects for Argentina.
While the European Union and United States face a marked reduction in their corn and wheat projections, the Argentine field could be heading towards a historic campaign in 2026/27.
In Europe, the European Commission has reduced its corn production forecast for the 2026/27 campaign to approximately 51.9 million tons. This is the lowest estimate since 2007.
In turn, various analysts and agricultural market consultancies, including Expana, Argus, and COCERAL, foresee an even tighter scenario and warn that production could fall below 50 million tons.
A figure of that level would not be recorded since the 1990s, reflecting the magnitude of the projected decline in corn production in the European Union.
The situation is equally complicated in the United States, although in this case the main focus is on wheat. The area planted with spring wheat is around 9.39 million acres, the lowest level since 1970.
