Ecuador raises the security rate for imports from Colombia to 100%

The National Government announced that the safety rate applied to products from Colombia will increase from 50% to 100% as of May 1, 2026. The decision is part of the strengthening of control on the northern border

.

According to the Executive, the measure responds to the need to address criminal activities such as drug trafficking and illegal economies in the neighboring area. The objective is to strengthen national security and demand greater co-responsibility in border control.

The decision generated an immediate reaction from Colombian President Gustavo Petro, who described it as a “monstrosity” and warned of possible impacts on regional integration. The exchange of statements raised diplomatic tension between the

two countries.

President Daniel Noboa responded that it is not possible to reach agreements with governments without the same commitment to the fight against narco-terrorism. In addition, he noted that security measures have already contributed to a 33% reduction in violent deaths on the northern border
