The communist mayor of New York City, Zohran Mamdani, is being accused of erasing the cultural identity of Italian Americans after failing to include them in the official immigrant map of the Big Apple.
Mamdani published this map on Wednesday and titled it "Immigrant Enclaves of New York City." It shows around 30 areas spread across the five boroughs of the Big Apple, ranging from places like Chinatown in Manhattan to Little Mexico in Brooklyn and Little Africa in the Bronx.
However, Little Italy, the famous historic neighborhood in Manhattan known for being built and populated by Italian immigrants, is nowhere to be found. "They managed to include a 'Little Bhod-Tibet,' but what about the original 'Little neighborhood,' Little Italy?" asked a stunned Joann Ariola, Republican councilwoman for the Queens neighborhood, in statements to the New York Post.

Italians are not the only ones ignored in Mamdani's map
For his part, Joseph Scelsa, founder of the Italian American Museum on Mulberry Street, also deemed this omission outrageous. "Italian Americans remain an important population in New York City. Not recognizing where Italian Americans came from and where they settled is a terrible mistake," the public figure stated. "I don't understand why Little Italy is not included. I hope it's just an oversight."
Italian immigrants and their neighborhood Little Italy were not the only ones omitted from the map commissioned by the communist politician, as the publication also fails to mention the large Orthodox Jewish community in New York and the Irish. In other words, the Muslim mayorignored white immigrants in his cultural map.
Several civil rights groups denounced that this move by Mamdani is not simply an oversight and are beginning to speak of an evident ideological bias.
