A group of 13 lawmakers and candidates from the Democratic Party launched a new political initiative to distance themselves from the growing socialist sector of the organization and regain the support of moderate voters ahead of the 2026 legislative elections.

Under the name ''Promise to America'', the bloc presented a manifesto in which it openly champions capitalism, border security, fiscal responsibility, and patriotism, signaling that the ideological battle within the party continues to intensify.

The presentation of the commitment comes just days after several candidates backed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) achieved significant victories in the primary elections in New York, results that strengthened the more leftist wing of the Democratic Party and raised alarms among those who believe that this ideological shift is distancing the party from independent voters and competitive districts.

The document sets forth strong positions on several issues that have divided Democrats in recent years. In the economic section, it states: ''We are capitalists, not socialists'', defending an economy based on private initiative, job creation, and growth, rather than models that expand the role of the state in economic activity.

The signatories argue that the goal must be to reduce the cost of living, expand opportunities for the middle class, and reward work and effort, avoiding policies that disincentivize investment, increase the tax burden, and hinder the competitiveness of the United States.

On public safety, the manifesto also adopts a firm stance. Under the slogan ''We want security, not anarchy'', the lawmakers support strengthening borders, orderly immigration, and supporting law enforcement to ensure safer communities. The statement represents a contrast with progressive sectors that in recent years have promoted deep reforms in police forces and harshly criticized immigration control policies.

The commitment also includes calls for fiscal responsibility and a more efficient management of the federal government. Its proponents argue that the country needs to control public spending and prudently manage taxpayer resources, moving away from proposals that involve significant increases in the state budget.

Another pillar of the document is the defense of freedom of expression and the rejection of ideological extremes. The signatories claim to represent a ''moderate and sensible'' current, distanced from leftist radicalism.

Additionally, they dedicate a section to patriotism, where they express pride in the United States and reject the view, increasingly common in progressive sectors, that exclusively emphasizes the historical mistakes of the country. For this group of lawmakers, recovering a message of national pride is essential to reconnect with millions of voters.

The emergence of this platform highlights the deep internal division that runs through the Democratic Party. For years, the coexistence between moderates and socialists has generated constant disputes over the direction the organization should take.

While centrist Democrats advocate for a market economy, a strong foreign policy, and pragmatic solutions to issues like illegal immigration, inflation, and crime, the socialist wing pushes for a much deeper transformation of the American economic and political system.

Leaders linked to the DSA promote proposals such as ''Medicare for All'', the ''Green New Deal'', higher taxes on the wealthy, and a significant expansion of public spending. Additionally, some of their representatives have supported initiatives to reduce police funding or rethink the functioning of security forces, measures that have been widely questioned by moderate sectors.

Critics of this current argue that many of these proposals are difficult to finance and could negatively affect economic growth, private investment, and job creation. They also believe that the socialist rhetoric has electorally harmed the Democratic Party in states and districts where voters prioritize economic stability, security, and immigration control.

Among the main proponents of ''Promise to America'' are representatives Tom Suozzi and Adam Gray, who lead the initiative, along with Josh Gottheimer, Susie Lee, Don Davis, Vicente González Jr., Laura Gillen, Janelle Bynum, Kristin McDonald Rivet, and Maggie Goodlander. Candidates Jessica Killin, Marlene Galán Woods, and Bobby Pulido have also joined.

During an interview, Suozzi explained that the goal is to better organize the moderate sector of the party to prevent the more radical voices from defining the image of the Democrats. ''We are capitalists, not socialists. We are for security, not anarchy. We are proud of the United States, not ashamed of our country,'' the lawmaker stated.

Suozzi added that the far left has very active and disciplined organizations, while moderates need to coordinate to regain political prominence.
