The vote count of the primaries for the 23rd district of the state of Indiana decided the election in favor of a candidate backed by Donald Trump who faced a politician from the Republican establishment who had opposed redistricting.
Republican state senator Spencer Deery had been slightly ahead during the night of the primary election that took place in May, but the count ended up tipping the scales in favor of Trump supporter Paula Copenhaver by just three votes, local media reported.
In Indiana, eight Republican state senators refused to support an initiative to redesign the state's electoral map, precisely in response to gerrymandering —the manipulation of district boundaries— that Democrats have historically pushed in states they control to gain an advantage in Congress ahead of the November legislative elections.
Trump decided to punish these Republicans for betraying their voters and supported candidates who challenged them in the primary, resulting in six of these eight "rebels" losing their seats on the same night of the primaries. Copenhaver's victory now brings the number of dethroned to seven.
