The Trump Administration calls on schools to teach the human costs of communism and socialism and their differences from the constitutional system of the U.S

The U.S. Department of Education urged schools across the country to reinforce teaching about the history of communism and socialism, with special emphasis on the human consequences of regimes that adopted those ideologies and in contrast to American constitutional principles.

Education Secretary Linda McMahon issued a letter on September 30 to educators and educational leaders asking that students understand the historical effects of collectivization, centralized economic planning, political coercion, and the suppression of dissent. The call is part of the efforts of President Donald Trump's administration to strengthen civic education and warn about the risks that can arise from communist and totalitarian ideologies.

''Students should be able to compare the true history of the violent ideology of socialism, its widespread atrocities, and its failures with the contrasting success of the constitutional republic designed by the founders of the United States,'' McMahon stated in the letter.

The Department of Education linked the initiative to the upcoming National Day of Mourning for the Victims of Communism, which will be commemorated on November 7. The date aims to remember the people who died under communist regimes and is part of a commemoration established during Trump's first term.

In her letter, McMahon pointed out historical episodes such as the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution in China, the Soviet gulag system, the Holodomor in Ukraine, and the murders committed during the Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia. The Department argues that these events must be part of the teaching so that students understand the consequences of political systems that restricted individual freedoms and concentrated state power.

The secretary also warned that an education that omits these episodes could leave young people without the necessary context to critically evaluate contemporary political proposals. Her concern coincides with recent data showing an increase in positive views of socialism among Americans.

A survey published in September found that 43% of American adults have a positive opinion of socialism, the highest percentage recorded by the organization since it began measuring this issue in 2010. Among adults aged 18 to 34, support reached 57%, compared to 34% among those aged 55 and older. The survey also recorded partisan differences: 65% of Democrats, 45% of independents, and 14% of Republicans expressed a positive opinion.

McMahon also highlighted measures taken by various states to incorporate the study of communism into their educational programs. Texas, for example, requires that social studies standards include content about communist regimes and ideologies, historical events and atrocities, testimonies from victims, and a comparison between communism and American principles of freedom, individual rights, and free enterprise.

Florida, Arizona, Tennessee, and Arkansas are also among the states mentioned by the Department of Education for their initiatives related to teaching about communism and totalitarianism. The federal agency clarified that its letter does not impose a specific national curriculum, but highlights state practices and measures it considers relevant.

The educational initiative adds to other statements from officials in the Trump administration about the threat posed by communist regimes. President Trump has publicly identified communism as a threat to the United States, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio has taken a similar stance when referring to the communist government of Cuba and its policies.
