This week, the CIA director of the Donald Trump administration, John Ratcliffe, visited Moscow on a trip that, according to multiple media reports, was aimed at warning the Kremlin against any attack on NATO nations.

Ratcliffe met with Russian intelligence officials, although not with President Vladimir Putin. This visit by a senior Trump administration official comes amid growing concerns that Russia may attack one of the Baltic states in the near future, all of which are NATO members.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022 and the conflict shows no signs of ending despite Trump's intense efforts to negotiate a peace agreement between the two nations to conclude the war.

The last time a U.S. official visited Russian territory was in 2021, when the Biden administration sent its CIA director to try to halt what was an imminent Kremlin invasion of Ukraine, a diplomatic mission that, as expected, failed.

Yesterday morning, in an interview with conservative journalist Glenn Beck, Trump described the trip as "semi-routine." "I hate to disappoint people," said the president, who reiterated his desire to see the end of the war and both countries engaged in a peace process.

For its part, a senior Ukrainian official speaking on condition of anonymity told The Associated Press that Washington informed Kiev about the delegation's trip to the Russian capital and requested that it suspend attacks while the visit lasted. However, the request only covered Moscow, St. Petersburg, and some northern regions, so military operations in other areas of the former Soviet territory continued.
