The historic participation of Cape Verde in the 2026 World Cup had an emotional final chapter. After their elimination at the hands of the Argentine National Team in the Round of 16, the delegation returned to their country and was welcomed by a crowd in Praia, the capital of the archipelago, where thousands of people took to the streets to honor the team that competed in a World Cup for the first time and became the tournament's great revelation.

The reception coincided with a very special date for the archipelago: the 51st anniversary of independence, proclaimed on July 5, 1975. Thus, the patriotic celebrations merged with the recognition of the "Blue Sharks" on a day filled with emotion, flags, music, and parades through the Cape Verdean capital.

The Cape Verdean Football Federation (FCF) had called on fans under the slogan "Let's welcome our heroes", and the response was massive. From the Nelson Mandela International Airport to the Quebra Canela neighborhood, the team traveled the streets aboard a truck specially equipped to greet the fans, who accompanied the journey with drums, jerseys, and national flags.

The team led by Bubista was the protagonist of a campaign that will go down in the history of the country's football. In their absolute World Cup debut, they finished the group stage unbeaten after drawing with Spain (0-0), Uruguay (2-2), and Saudi Arabia (0-0), and then pushed the Albiceleste to the limit in the Round of 16, where Lionel Scaloni's team only managed to prevail by 3-2 in extra time.

On the other hand, the celebration also included official acts. According to the agency Inforpress, the players participated in a solemn session in the National Assembly, a tribute to the heroes of national liberation, and a recognition at the Presidential Palace.

During the events, President José Maria Neves and Prime Minister Francisco Carvalho highlighted the impact that the team's performance had both inside and outside the country. Both emphasized that the national team managed to project the name of Cape Verde internationally thanks to their talent, commitment, and bravery.

As part of the recognition, Carvalho announced that July 3, the date on which Cape Verde faced Argentina in the Round of 16, will be commemorated each year as the "Day of the Blue Sharks". The initiative aims to preserve the memory of a campaign that, according to the Government, transcended the sporting realm to become a symbol of national pride and inspiration for future generations.

Although their World Cup adventure has come to an end, the return made it clear that this team already occupies a privileged place in the country's history. For a archipelago of less than 500,000 inhabitants, the performance of the Blue Sharks represented much more than a sporting achievement: it became a celebration of identity, unity, and belonging.
