The return of the Argentine National Team after the last World Cup will be marked by several changes and some certainties still pending. In this context, Emiliano Martínez arrived in the country to join the training sessions ahead of the friendlies against Bolivia, Burkina Faso, and Benin, and upon his arrival in Ezeiza he addressed various topics concerning the national team.
The goalkeeper began with the World Cup final, in which Argentina lost to Spain 1-0 in extra time. Several months after that defeat, Martínez admitted that the result still leaves him with a lingering feeling and stated: "It’s nice to reach a final again, and unfortunately, we couldn’t win it; we will be left with this regret for a long time".
When asked about the farewell of Lionel Messi with the Albiceleste jersey, the new Chelsea goalkeeper acknowledged: "Honestly, I thought he had already retired". Beyond that reaction, the goalkeeper emphasized the possibility that Messi could end his time with the Albiceleste in the country. "Having the chance to retire in Argentina is a dream for him, and we will try to make it a nice day for him", he stated.
The future of Lionel Scaloni was another topic Martínez discussed. The coach's contract expires on December 31, and there is still no decision regarding his continuity, although the goalkeeper made it clear that the decision will be exclusively up to the coach and his team. "I have no idea; it’s something between him and his team. Whatever he decides, we will support it", he affirmed.
