The pact with Denmark and Greenland will allow for an expanded U.S. military presence in the Arctic, with new facilities in Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig and the modernization of Pituffik
In the context of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, on September 22, a decisive strategic victory was consolidated for the leadership of United States and the stability of the free world. President Donald Trump, along with the Prime Minister of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen, and the Prime Minister of Greenland, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, signed the historic security pact that grants Washingtonpermanent control over the security of the strategic territory in the Arctic and the North Atlantic.
The absolute focus of this military deployment lies in the fact that United States will immediately begin the construction of two strategic military bases at key geographical points in Greenland. Donald Trump confirmed this before the UN forum: "We will immediately begin the process of developing a large military presence in the appropriate locations", specifying the creation of "two very important military bases".
The plan authorizes the establishment of defense areas at the following key sites:
Narsarsuaq: Located at the southern tip of Greenland. This point housed the U.S. military installation Bluie West One during the Cold War, which ceased operations in the 1950s. The construction of a new military base in this area recovers an essential surveillance position in the North Atlantic.
Mestersvig: Situated on the eastern coast of Greenland. In this remote region, the Sirius Patrol, a specialized Danish military surveillance unit, currently operates. The new defense installation of United States will ensure strict protection over the maritime routes and resources of the Arctic Ocean.
Along with the construction of the two new military fortresses, the pact provides for the expansion and modernization of the capabilities of the Pituffik Space Base. Located in the northwest of the island, Pituffik has so far represented the only active military installation of Washington in Greenland following the reduction of presence that occurred since the 20th century. It carries out vital tasks of alert and missile defense, space surveillance, and strategic missions for NATO.
Trump and the Danish Prime Minister
The agreement also includes a substantial increase in the military mobility of United States, allowing submarine access in the region. At the same time, the operational clauses ensure that contracts related to the construction of the new military bases prioritize Greenlandic suppliers.
Finally, the treaty formally reaffirms respect for Danish sovereignty and the self-determination of the local population, establishing that if Greenland were to decide to become independent in the future, the Arctic security provisions and the military bases of United States will remain in effect indefinitely, with the sine qua non condition of maintaining the territory's membership in NATO.
This legal framework categorically restricts any non-NATO country, directly targeting Russia and China, from installing military forces or maintaining a permanent military presence and sensitive investments without express written authorization from the U.S. administration.
The Republican leader highlighted the financial advantages of the treaty by stating: "It will cost the United States NOTHING!". Furthermore, Donald Trump emphasized the significance of this victory compared to past administrations:

"We will have a tremendous relationship, a secure relationship, and we look forward to it. We will work very hard and very closely, and it is a true honor to be here. This has been a long time coming. Almost all presidents at least mentioned it, but most just left it at that. Some really wanted to finalize an agreement and never succeeded. But we are making it a reality, so this is tremendous for Europe, for the United States, for everyone, and for Greenland. It’s going to be amazing".
In the same line of support for U.S. leadership, Mette Frederiksen praised the historical role of United States stating that "it defended the free world, created prosperity and progress, peace and freedom", directly adding to Donald Trump: "You have been very clear: you do not want adversaries getting too close. I completely agree". For his part, Jens-Frederik Nielsen emphasized the loyalty of the Arctic territory stating that the agreement "must dispel any doubt today and in the future about where Greenland's loyalty lies", concluding with the premise: "Your security is our security, and our security is yours".
