The Iranian regime confirmed this Sunday that the text of the memorandum of understanding with the United States has been completed and that the agreement includes the immediate and permanent end of military operations in the Middle East, including the front in Lebanon.
The statement was released by the Iranian Supreme National Security Council, which attempted to present the understanding as a “victory” for Tehran over the “American-Zionist enemy,” despite the announcement coming after weeks of military pressure, naval blockade, and negotiations driven by the administration of Donald Trump with the mediation of Pakistan.
The Iranian regime is trying to communicate the agreement as a victory to its own people.
According to the text released by Iran, “military and war operations on all fronts, including Lebanon, will end immediately and permanently starting tonight.” The statement also indicates that the naval blockade will be lifted immediately, a central point for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important energy routes.
The official signing of the memorandum is scheduled for Friday, June 19, in Switzerland. However, Tehran clarified that the final agreement will be subject to the fulfillment of commitments made by the U.S. counterpart, a common formula of the regime to try to maintain internal political leverage while accepting conditions imposed from outside.
The Iranian announcement came after the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif, reported that the United States and Iran had reached a peace agreement to stop hostilities. Pakistan acted as a key mediator in the talks, along with other regional actors seeking to channel the crisis.
For his part, Donald Trump had already announced that the agreement with Iran was complete and ordered the advancement of the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the lifting of the U.S. naval blockade. The Republican administration presented the understanding as a completely different pact from the nuclear agreement signed by Barack Obama in 2015, emphasizing that this time there would be no upfront economic concessions or relief from sanctions without verifiable compliance.
