Lunar eclipse: all the timings of its stages

  • 10:24 PM: start of the penumbral phase.

  • 11:34 PM: start of the partial eclipse.

  • 1:13 AM: maximum point of the eclipse.

  • 2:52 AM: end of the partial phase.

  • 4:02 AM: complete end of the phenomenon.

The partial phase will last approximately three hours and 18 minutes. If the entry and exit of the penumbra are included, the entire phenomenon will last about five hours and 38 minutes.

The possibility of observing the lunar eclipse in Argentina will depend on weather conditions. A clear sky or one with little cloud cover will allow for better tracking of the shadow's advance.

Why the Moon may appear red during the eclipse

During the maximum, the Moon will not necessarily disappear completely. Part of its surface may take on reddish, coppery, or orange tones.

This occurs because of the way sunlight passes through the Earth's atmosphere. Blue wavelengths scatter more easily, while reddish and orange ones can reach the lunar surface.

Since a small part of the Moon will remain outside the shadow, there will also be a contrast between the illuminated area and the darkened region.

How to safely observe the lunar eclipse

The lunar eclipse can be observed directly without special glasses, filters, or other protective elements for the eyes.

A telescope is also not necessary. The phenomenon can be followed with the naked eye from various points in the country, as long as the sky allows for good visibility.

Those with binoculars or a telescope can use them to appreciate in greater detail how the shadow advances over the lunar surface.

To observe it better, it is recommended to find a place with good visibility of the sky and, if possible, away from intense sources of artificial lighting.

When will a similar lunar eclipse be visible again in Argentina

The lunar eclipse in Argentina this Thursday will have a particularity: it will be the last of this kind visible from the country until June 2029
