The new adaptation of The Odyssey directed by Christopher Nolan has once again become embroiled in controversy after the filmmaker explained why he decided to incorporate rapper Travis Scott into the film's cast. According to an interview with Time Magazine, Nolan considered that modern rap functions similarly to the oral poetry of Homer.

The statement generated a strong reaction on social media and among fans of epic cinema, especially since Scott will participate as an actor and not as a musician within the production. The director stated that he aimed to “make a nod to the idea that this story was transmitted as oral poetry, something analogous to rap”.

In other words, Nolan argues that both The Odyssey and rap share elements such as rhythm, memorization, and the oral transmission of stories across generations. However, many viewers labeled the explanation as “forced,” “pretentious,” and disconnected from the figure of Travis Scott, who is primarily known for modern trap and not precisely for complex narrative lyrics.

The rapper's involvement had already generated criticism since December, when he briefly appeared in a promotional teaser lasting only 30 seconds. His acting and manner of speaking were questioned by the audience, although all indications suggest he will have a secondary role within the story.

A classical Greece influenced by the woke agenda

The controversy surrounding The Odyssey is not limited solely to Travis Scott. For weeks, the film has faced accusations of promoting a “woke” reinterpretation of classical Greece through casting decisions deemed ideological by a large part of the audience.

Among the most discussed choices are the African American Zendaya as Athena, the Kenyan-Mexican Lupita Nyong'o linked to the role of Helen of Troy, and the transgender Elliot Page portraying Achilles. Critics argue that the production has deliberately abandoned any attempt at historical or cultural fidelity regarding the ancient Greek world.

Even Elon Musk publicly questioned the film's direction and accused Nolan of succumbing to the “woke virus”. This is compounded by mockery over modern dialogues present in the trailers, where Bronze Age characters use contemporary expressions like “daddy” or “let’s go.”

Thus, what was supposed to be presented as an epic blockbuster about one of the foundational narratives of the West has turned into another cultural battleground. The film has yet to hit theaters, but Nolan is already facing criticism for an adaptation more concerned with reinterpreting Homer in woke terms than respecting the original spirit of the work.
