After weeks shrouded in mystery, José Mourinho has been officially confirmed as the new coach of Real Madrid and will begin his second term at the helm of the white team thirteen years after his departure. The Portuguese signed a contract for three seasons and will remain in the position until June 30, 2029.
The Madrid institution announced the hiring through a statement released this Thursday, detailing that the decision was approved by the Board of Directors led by Florentino Pérez.
"The Board of Directors of Real Madrid C. F., meeting today Thursday, June 11, and presided over by Florentino Pérez, has agreed to appoint José Mourinho as the first team coach for the next three seasons, until June 30, 2029", the club reported. Additionally, it specified that the coach will join on July 13, the scheduled date for the start of preseason.
The arrival of the Portuguese represents one of the most significant moves in European football in this market and one of the first major sports decisions by Florentino Pérez after being re-elected as president of the institution.
To finalize the operation, Real Madrid executed the release clause that linked Mourinho to Benfica. The Portuguese club had already confirmed in recent days the payment of the 15 million euros stipulated in the coach's contract, paving the way for his return to the Merengue, which he had already managed between 2010 and 2013 in a period marked by the conquest of titles and the intense rivalry he had with Pep Guardiola's Barcelona.
Mourinho's first spell at Real Madrid was overshadowed by Pep Guardiola's Barcelona
Now he will face a different scenario, with the mission to bring Real Madrid back to the forefront after a season below expectations. Among his first challenges will be planning the preseason, evaluating the squad, and integrating the reinforcements that arrived for the new sports project.
With a contract secured until 2029 and the support of the management, Mourinho begins a new stage at one of the most important clubs of his career, in a return that once again places the Portuguese coach at the center of the world football scene.

In his first stint with the Merengue, the Portuguese coach managed 178 matches, of which he won 127, drew 28, and lost 23, with a record of 476 goals for and 171 against. In terms of titles, The Special One won 3: Copa del Rey 2010/11, LaLiga 2011/12 (the historic campaign of 100 points), and Supercopa de España 2012.
