Suri Cruise legally removed her father's last name, Tom Cruise: the scandalous reasons behind it

Suri Cruise, the only daughter of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, made a decision that has once again brought attention to her troubled relationship with her father. At 20 years old, the college student legally stopped using the surname Cruise and changed her name to Suri Noelle, according to the voter registration records of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, documents accessed by People magazine. Currently, Suri is studying at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, where she made the change when registering to vote during her first academic year in October 2024.

The chosen surname was not a coincidence. "Noelle" corresponds to her mother Katie Holmes' middle name, with whom she has maintained a close relationship since her parents separated.

Although the legal modification has only come to light now, Suri had already signaled months earlier. In June 2024, during her high school graduation ceremony, she was publicly introduced as Suri Noelle, a detail that sparked speculation about a possible definitive decision regarding her identity.

That same weekend, while her daughter celebrated the end of a chapter, Tom Cruise was photographed in London enjoying one of the concerts of Taylor Swift's The Eras Tour, an image that reignited rumors about the limited relationship he has with Suri.

Shortly after, Katie Holmes spoke about her daughter's present in an interview with Town & Country and expressed the pride she feels for this new stage.

"I am proud of my daughter. Of course, I will miss the closeness, but I am really proud of her and I am happy", the actress stated.

Additionally, she recalled her own experience when starting adulthood: "I remember being at this age, this time of beginnings. It's exciting to learn about oneself, and I loved that time, so it makes me happy to think of it that way", she added.

The reasons behind the distancing

Although neither Suri nor Tom Cruise have publicly commented on the name change, the decision has once again brought to the forefront a story marked by years of estrangement.
