The U.S. president will lead his final electoral event in Washington before the legislative elections. Republicans are seeking to maintain control of Congress in the face of a Democratic offensive aimed at limiting the White House's agenda

Democrats believe that regaining control of the House of Representatives would allow them to have greater influence over the federal budget and lead congressional committees capable of investigating the Republican administration.

An opposing majority in the Senate could also complicate the confirmation of officials and judges proposed by Trump, especially for federal positions of a lifetime nature.

The battle for the upper chamber remains open. In this election, a third of its 100 seats is up for renewal, and some of the most competitive races show narrow differences between candidates.

A poll from The New York Times and Siena, published on Sunday, placed Democrats ahead in seven of the races considered most competitive, although five remained within the margin of error.

More than 54 million Americans have already voted

The election also records a record early turnout, with more than 54 million Americans having already cast their votes before election day.

The campaign was accompanied by advertising spending close to $11 billion and significant participation from major private donors. Among them was Elon Musk, a political ally of Trump and one of the main proponents of the DOGE initiative, which promoted reducing the size of the state apparatus.

The campaign closure in Washington will be Trump's last opportunity to publicly defend his management before Americans define the new composition of Congress.

The result will have direct consequences on the president's ability to advance his agenda during the second half of his term. A Republican victory would maintain legislative control, while a Democratic advance would open a new scenario of political confrontation in Washington.

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, will lead this Monday the last major event of his campaign for the midterm elections with a speech in front of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington. The president will take advantage of the historic setting to claim the results of his administration, defend the Republican agenda, and call on Americans to support his party in an election that will determine control of Congress.

The presentation will take place at the reflecting pool of the monument and will mark the conclusion of an intense electoral tour that included more than 25 events in various states over the past few weeks. Trump made his last in-person stops on Sunday in Iowa and Kansas, where he urged voters to support Republican candidates and back the direction of his second term.

According to a White House official, the speech will focus on the policies promoted by Trump and Republican lawmakers since the beginning of his new administration, as well as the renewal projects the president advocates for the U.S. capital.

Trump chooses a historic setting for his final electoral message

The decision to close the campaign in Washington, instead of making another tour through competitive states, turned the Lincoln Memorial into the center of the Republican electoral day.

The president hinted at his intention to hold the event when he arrived in Iowa. When asked about his presence at the reflecting pool, he stated that he wanted to show “how beautiful it is” and suggested that the activity would take place on Monday. Hours later, the White House officially confirmed the event.

The location is also linked to one of the renewal projects promoted by Trump during his second term. The president personally defended the work done at the pool and other interventions in Washington, including the construction of a new ballroom at the White House.

However, the renovation of the pool faced difficulties. The budget ended up far exceeding the initial estimate of $1.5 million, and the work took longer than expected. After algae appeared and part of the blue lining began to peel off, the structure had to be drained again for repairs.

Trump claimed that the damage was a result of acts of vandalism. However, federal prosecutors attributed the problems to deficiencies in the installation and dropped the charges against former Olympic athlete David Hearn, who had been accused of alleged intentional damage.

Republicans seek to defend their majority against the Democratic offensive

This Tuesday's elections will renew part of Congress and represent a political test for Trump's second term. Republicans are looking to maintain control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, while Democrats aim to regain at least one of the two chambers.

During his last events, the president intensified his criticisms against the opposition and portrayed Democrats as a threat to his government program.

In Iowa, Trump labeled them as “radical extremists and dangerous” and warned about the consequences that, in his view, an opposing victory would have.

The Republican campaign focused on defending the administration's policies, mobilizing the conservative electorate, and preventing the opposition from gaining enough seats to block major presidential initiatives.

However, polls also reflected difficulties for the ruling party. A NBC News poll published on Sunday indicated that 60% of Americans disapproved of the presidential management, with particular concern about the cost of living and prices.

Democrats seek to regain Congress to block Trump

The opposition is also preparing its final events before the vote. Among the main activities are the presentations of James Talarico in Texas and Adam Hamilton in Kansas, candidates looking to strengthen Democratic chances in two key states for the Senate race.
