During an interview aired on Sunday on CBS, Manchin was asked if he would be willing to support any socialist candidate. His response was immediate: ''No way''. When host Margaret Brennan asked if he would change his mind if those candidates advocated for some good proposals, the former senator assured that he is willing to support concrete ideas, but not political projects that threaten the fundamental structures of the country.
Manchin specifically questioned the positions of socialist sectors that propose radical reforms of the government and the American political system. ''Have you seen their platform?'', he asked, before warning that some of these groups promote dismantling governmental structures, eliminating institutions like the Senate, and adopting stances that he considers incompatible with public safety.
One of his main arguments was related to security and the role of law enforcement. Manchin rejected proposals from extreme left sectors that question the role of the police and defended the need for security forces to ensure safe communities. He also called for a strong national defense and greater border control.

Some politicians backed by DSA, such as New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, and congressional candidate from New York Darializa Avila Chevalier, have increased their presence within the Democratic Party.

The evolution of public opinion also reflects the challenge. A survey published in July showed that 52% of Democrats had a favorable opinion of socialism, compared to 41% who had a favorable view of capitalism. Among all registered voters, socialism reached 30% favorable opinions, compared to 27% recorded the previous year.
Manchin's rejection thus highlights a growing dispute within the Democratic Party between moderate sectors and a left that is gaining electoral ground. His criticisms of DSA and socialism reflect the fear that the party may end up adopting positions that could alienate independent and moderate voters, especially on issues such as security, energy, defense, and border control.
