The president proposed to "recover" the capital in case a far-left socialist candidate wins the mayoral election

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, stated that he is considering federalizing Washington DC, the capital of the United States, in the event that a far-left socialist candidate is elected as the next mayor.

During an event in the Oval Office, the president left open the possibility that the federal government would take a direct role in the administration of the district. “I wouldn’t like it, and maybe we’ll take back Washington and govern it at the federal level,” he said when asked about the electoral scenario.

In that same vein, Trump emphasized his stance regarding a potential political shift in the city. “We are not going to tolerate it. We are not going to lose our businesses,” he declared to reporters, referring to the possibility of a “radical socialist” taking office.

His statements target the councilwoman of Washington D.C., Janeese Lewis George, who self-identifies as socialist and leads the polls in the race to succeed outgoing mayor Muriel Bowser.

The latest polls show that Lewis George maintains a double-digit lead over former councilmember Kenyan McDuffie, ahead of the Democratic primaries scheduled for June 16.

Trump's proposal fits into a broader strategy of his administration to reinforce control and security in the nation’s capital. The president has repeatedly pointed to issues related to crime and urban violence as factors justifying a greater federal presence.

Federal Intervention in Washington D.C.

In August of last year, the Republican administration ordered the federal intervention of the Washington D.C. police department and deployed National Guard troops in response to the rise in crime due to the disastrous Democratic management.

This deployment allowed for a significant reduction in crime rates in the city. A National Guard official noted earlier this year that the Pentagon plans to maintain troop presence in the capital until 2029.

In this context, Trump asserted that the current conditions in Washington reflect a concrete improvement. “Washington is now a safe and beautiful place,” he stated, adding: “People are coming; restaurants are thriving.”

The president also warned that a shift towards socialist policies could destroy those advancements, generating a negative impact on economic activity and the retention of businesses in the nation’s capital.
