The president Donald Trump paid tribute to South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham after his sudden passing on Saturday night. Through a post on Truth Social, the president described his ally as "one of the greatest people" he ever knew.
"Senator Lindsey Graham, one of the best people and senators I have known, has died!" the president wrote. "He was always working and was a true American patriot. He will be greatly missed. DETAILS AND PREPARATIONS BELOW. How sad!"
This morning, during an interview on the Meet The Press program, Trump revealed that he spoke with Graham minutes before he collapsed. "He sounded a bit tired," the president detailed. "It may have been his last call."
One of Trump's biggest allies in the Senate has just passed away
A death that shakes the Republican Party and Washington
Although Graham was not always popular among the Republican base, he developed a friendship with Trump and became one of his key allies in the Senate. One of the most memorable moments of his career, which Trump referenced during the interview, was his effort to secure the confirmation of conservative judge Brett Kavanaugh, who faced scrutiny from Democrats and feminist movements during his confirmation process.
As one of the most active legislators interested in U.S. foreign policy, Graham had just returned from a trip to Ukraine, where he met with President Volodymyr Zelensky and visited a drone factory.
The death of the 71-year-old politician leaves a power vacuum in an increasingly complex Senate for Trump's agenda. Now, the Republican governor of South Carolina, Henry McMaster, will have the authority to appoint a temporary replacement until special elections are held to determine the permanent occupant of the seat.
