The president Donald Trump participated this morning in an event alongside the prime ministers of Denmark and Greenland where he signed the historic pact that grants the United States permanent control over the security of the Arctic island.

Last Friday, Trump announced that he had reached an agreement with the Danes and Greenlanders after more than a year of expressing his desire to buy the Arctic island for defense purposes. "It will cost the United States NOTHING!" the Republican stated about the deal, emphasizing that "from now on, no adversary of the U.S. will EVER be able to have a base in Greenland, nor military presence, nor make sensitive investments without our express written authorization."

The signing ceremony took place at the UN General Assembly held in New York, and was attended by Trump himself along with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen. The three leaders made brief statements to the press about the future of this cooperation to secure the Arctic.

"We will have a tremendous relationship, a secure relationship, and we look forward to it. We will work very hard and very closely, and it is a true honor to be here. This has been a long time coming. Almost all presidents at least mentioned it, but most just left it at that. Some really wanted to make a deal and never succeeded. But we are making it a reality, so this is tremendous for Europe, for the United States, for everyone, and for Greenland. It’s going to be amazing," Trump stated.

For her part, Frederiksen praised the U.S. by highlighting that "it defended the free world, created prosperity and progress, peace and freedom" and described the pact as "good for the United States, good for Greenland, for Denmark, for NATO allies, and therefore also for Europe." She also thanked Trump for the agreement and for ensuring global security.

Frederik Nielsen stated that it is an "important day for our shared security" and asserted that the agreement "must dispel any doubts today and in the future about where Greenland's loyalty lies". He emphasized that Greenland has always been "a loyal friend of the U.S. and part of the Western alliance" and that "its security is our security, and our security is theirs."
