Trump strengthens his power in the Republican Party after the victory of his gubernatorial candidate in Michigan

President Donald Trump has once again demonstrated his influence within the Republican Party following the victory of Congressman John James in the gubernatorial primaries for Michigan, a result that consolidates the president as a decisive figure for Republican candidates seeking to prevail in competitive elections.

James, a Republican congressman and former Senate candidate from Michigan, defeated billionaire businessman Perry Johnson in a contest that became one of the main recent tests of Trump's political weight. The president had endorsed James at the end of June and subsequently campaigned alongside the congressman during a rally in Michigan, publicly reinforcing his candidacy.

With the victory, James will face Jocelyn Benson, the current Secretary of State of Michigan and Democratic Party candidate, in a high-profile contest to succeed Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who cannot seek a third term due to term limits.

The result represents a significant boost for Trump in one of the key states of the American Midwest. Michigan was one of the central battlegrounds in the recent presidential elections and remains crucial territory for both political forces.

James, a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and an Army veteran who completed several combat missions as an Apache helicopter pilot during the Iraq War, presented a picture of leadership, experience, and discipline during the campaign. On the eve of the election, he stated that "no one works harder than a ranger" and maintained that money was not the only determining factor in winning an election.

Johnson, who invested millions of dollars from his own fortune in the campaign and significantly outspent James, ran an aggressive campaign. In one of the most controversial moments of the contest, he labeled James as a "DEI candidate" and later accused his rival of using racial issues as a political argument.

James responded by calling Johnson "desperate" and focused his message on his experience and leadership ability to transform Michigan.

The victory also reinforces Trump's strategy of directly intervening in Republican primaries to boost candidates he believes are capable of representing his agenda. Although the president has faced some setbacks, his endorsement continues to demonstrate a considerable ability to mobilize Republican voters.

Trump maintains his influence in Republican primaries

During the spring and summer, several candidates backed by Trump succeeded in important Republican contests. His candidates defeated incumbent politicians or aspirants backed by traditional party sectors in states like Indiana, Kentucky, and Texas, in addition to achieving a significant victory in Louisiana.

One of the exceptions occurred in Iowa, where Congressman Randy Feenstra did not prevail despite receiving last-minute support from the president. Zach Lahn, a businessman, farmer, and former political strategist, secured a narrow victory with the backing of sectors linked to the "Make America Healthy Again" movement and "Turning Point USA."

However, that setback did not substantially alter the overall trend. In Georgia and Alabama, Trump-backed candidates won two of the three major runoff contests held in June. Shortly thereafter, Anthony Constantino, a businessman and former boxer, defeated state assemblyman Robert Smullen in New York, a former Marine Corps colonel who had the backing of the state party.

In South Carolina, Trump even had a favorable situation regardless of the outcome. The president had previously endorsed Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evette and later supported Attorney General Alan Wilson, who ended up winning the runoff by a wide margin.

Also in Louisiana, Trump's support helped unseat Senator Bill Cassidy, who had voted to convict the president during the second impeachment trial in 2021. Representative Julia Letlow, backed by Trump, ultimately secured the nomination.

In Arizona, Representative Andy Biggs, former chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, achieved a decisive victory last month in the Republican gubernatorial primaries.

James' victory in Michigan thus adds to a series of results that keep Trump as the leading figure in the Republican Party. His ability to select candidates and mobilize the conservative base continues to be a significant political advantage heading into the 2026 elections.

Now, James must carry that momentum into a much more challenging general election. His showdown with Benson will test whether the Trump-backed candidate can convert the energy of the Republican primaries into a sufficiently broad coalition to reclaim the governorship of Michigan for the GOP.
