The representatives of the US and Iran have reached an agreement to sign a memorandum of understanding that extends the ceasefire for 60 days and immediately initiates negotiations to end Iran's nuclear program, although President Donald Trump has not yet given his final approval.
The proposed agreement would represent the most significant diplomatic advance since the war began. However, additional negotiations would be necessary to address Trump's demands regarding Iran's nuclear activities, according to Axios, citing a US official and regional sources.
While the terms of the agreement were practically finalized on Tuesday night, both parties needed the approval of their respective high commands before proceeding to sign. In the case of Iran, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei is hiding after being injured by US attacks in the early days of the war.
Trump will evaluate the 60-day pact to maintain the truce in Iran and negotiate the nuclear issue achieved by the parties.
Iran agrees to hand over its stockpile of enriched uranium
For his part, Trump has not immediately approved the pact. "The president conveyed to the mediators that he wants a couple of days to reflect on it," a White House official told Axios.
The memorandum worked on by the parties states that navigation through the Strait of Hormuz would remain "unrestricted", prohibiting the regime from tolls and harassment, and requiring the removal of all mines that were placed in the strait within 30 days. In exchange, the US naval blockade of Iranian ports would be gradually lifted, subject to the restoration of maritime trade activity.
Iran commits to not seek the development of nuclear weapons in this preliminary agreement and, during the 60-day negotiation period, discussions would focus on the elimination of highly enriched uranium stockpiles and the future of uranium enrichment by this country.
Only after observing concrete actions in this area, would the United States agree to discuss the easing of sanctions and the release of frozen regime funds as part of the talks. The memorandum would also establish dialogue tables on a mechanism to facilitate the delivery of goods and humanitarian aid to Iran.
