The president Javier Milei led a national broadcast on Thursday, August 3, dedicated to the Argentine sovereignty over the Falkland Islands, in which he hardened his stance against the exploitation of natural resources in the South Atlantic and announced a series of economic, legal, and strategic measures.

One of the main focuses was on the oil project Sea Lion, operated by Navitas Petroleum and Rockhopper Exploration. According to the president, the government believes that the advancement of this initiative requires an immediate response to protect Argentine interests.

In this context, Milei anticipated that sanctions would be imposed on companies involved in operations in the islands without Argentine authorization. He also announced the construction of an integrated naval base in Tierra del Fuego, the submission to Congress of a law for the defense of national sovereignty, and the creation of a National Security Council.

The head of state emphasized the importance that the South Atlantic, its natural resources, and Antarctica will have in the geopolitical landscape of the coming decades.

  • “Defending our sovereignty and recovering our islands requires being a politically relevant nation, economically influential, and militarily respectable.”
With this statement, Milei summarized the three pillars that, from his perspective, Argentina needs to strengthen to effectively sustain its claim.

  • “There are causes that are above any political difference. The Falklands are one of them.”
Toward the end of the national broadcast, the President called on political, economic, and social leaders to maintain a common position regarding the islands.
