June 25, 1978 marked a turning point for the Argentine National Team. That day, the team led by César Luis Menotti defeated the Netherlands 3-1 in the World Cup final and achieved the first title in its history.

In front of a packed Monumental stadium, the national team needed extra time to claim one of the most memorable finals in World Cup history. Mario Alberto Kempes was the standout player of the day, scoring 2 goals and turning the match around against the "Clockwork Orange," while Daniel Bertoni sealed the victory that sparked an unforgettable celebration throughout the country.

Regarding the match against the Netherlands, Kempes opened the scoring in the first half, but just when the game seemed to be heading towards an Argentine victory, Dick Nanninga equalized for the Europeans just minutes before the end.

Argentine hearts stopped when in the last action of regulation time, Rob Rensenbrink was inches away from changing history with a shot that hit the post.

In extra time, Argentina regained control. Kempes appeared again to make it 2-1 and shortly after, Bertoni took advantage of a rebound in the area to establish the definitive 3-1 that secured the first star for the Albiceleste.
