Malvinas recovers with real power, not with an empty epic

For decades, Argentina spoke of the Malvinas with solemnity, slogans and patriotic liturgy. But history demonstrates an uncomfortable truth: no sovereign claim weighs too much when formulated by an impoverished, disarmed, indebted and diplomatically irrelevant country. Sovereignty is not claimed. It is built with power.

That is why Argentina's new position vis-a-vis the United Kingdom marks a change of era. The Government of Javier Milei reaffirmed sovereign rights over the Malvinas, South Georgia, South Sandwich and surrounding maritime areas, but it did so within a broader strategy: aligning incentives, strengthening the economy, recovering military capabilities and taking advantage of cracks in the international table. The Argentine left never understood this. He confused sovereignty with discourse. He made the Malvinas an emotional stamp while destroying the material conditions to defend any national interest. Kirchnerism shouted against imperialism, but it left Argentina weak, without currency, without credit, without modern armed forces and increasingly dependent on China, Russia or any power willing

to finance the decline.

Milei starts from a different premise: the economy is the basis of power. A broken country doesn't negotiate, it begs. A country without stability does not impose respect, it generates pity. A country without credible defense does not project sovereignty, it barely manages nostalgia. That is why fiscal balance, openness, investment, military modernization and alignment with the West are not separate chapters. They are pieces of the same strategic architecture.

The purchase of F-16s is not an ornamental gesture. It is the recovery of lost capacity and a signal to the outside. Nor is it less that, according to British reports replicated these days, the United States has pushed for London not to block the operation. Geopolitics doesn't work with school poems, but with incentives, costs and alliances. If Washington begins to see Argentina as a useful ally, and not as an unstable satellite of Latin American populism, Argentine demand gains density

That's the central difference. The empty epic of the past was content to denounce. The current strategy seeks to accumulate power. It's not enough to say “the Falklands are Argentinian”. We must ensure that this phrase has diplomatic, economic and military consequences. It must become expensive for the United Kingdom to continue ignoring the dispute. A historic claim must be transformed into a real problem for those who manage a colonial situation

The Argentine statement also hits where it hurts: the natural resources of the South Atlantic. Because the Malvinas is not just memory, flag or territory. It's fishing, oil, Antarctic projection, maritime control and strategic power. While previous governments took refuge in rhetoric, foreign companies were making headway on riches that Argentina claims as their own. Sovereignty without resource control is political literature.

Kicillof and progressivism once again repeat the worn-out accusation of “surrender”. But the truly surrendering thing was to turn Argentina into an irrelevant country. Deliverance was to destroy the coin. Surrendering was to empty the defense. Surprising was to use the Falklands as an emotional decoration while poverty, inflation and dependence multiplied

Milei seems to understand something elementary: sovereignty requires a cold brain and a warm heart. Heart to never give up the claim. Brain to know that the world doesn't reward the weak or listen to the broken. Falkland Islands will not return out of nostalgia. It will return, if it returns, when Argentina ceases to be a warning and returns to being a respected power

By history, by law and by strategy, the Malvinas are Argentinian. But to recover them, Argentine power must first be rebuilt
