The Municipal Council of the city of Santa Fe unanimously approved on Thursday the ordinance that officially names "Paseo Costanera Lionel Messi" the Costanera Este, one of the main coastal spaces of the provincial capital, previously named "Néstor Kirchner".
The initiative was presented by councilor Ana Cantiani from La Libertad Avanza, and ultimately received support from all blocks of the deliberative body. Thus, the name of Lionel Messi has been officially incorporated into one of the most representative promenades of the city.
The new promenade spans approximately 1,500 meters and extends from the southern end of Alicia Moreau de Justo Avenue to the slope that constitutes the natural northern limit of Néstor Kirchner Avenue. The designation covers the roadways, sidewalks, beaches, and green spaces that are part of this sector of Costanera Este.

One of the main attractions of the place is the Hanging Bridge, which is integrated as part of the postcard of the new Paseo Costanera Lionel Messi, along with the traditional beaches of Laguna Setúbal.
The proposal was submitted to the Council in March and was promoted by Cantiani with the aim of honoring the Argentine footballer and advancing the “depoliticization” of public spaces.
“Leo represents effort, perseverance, and pride for everyone; we want Messi's name to be forever associated with one of the most emblematic postcards of our city,” stated the leader of La Libertad Avanza.
With the approval of the ordinance, the space that was previously identified as Néstor Kirchner has officially taken on the new name.
The renowned coastal promenade
In addition to the name change, the ordinance authorizes the Municipality to manage, through public-private partnership mechanisms, the installation of a sculpture or other artistic intervention in homage to Lionel Messi. The intention is for this eventual work not to incur expenses for the municipal coffers.
The project also contemplates the possibility of incorporating a plaque in recognition of Jorge Messi, father and representative of the footballer, as a tribute related to the family roots of the Argentine player.
The approval of the project thus transformed Costanera Néstor Kirchner into Paseo Costanera Lionel Messi, a new designation that will be associated with one of the most recognized tourist and recreational areas of the capital of Santa Fe.
The initiative from La Libertad Avanza ultimately garnered unanimous support in the Municipal Council and formally changed the name of the coastal promenade.
