Zelensky replaces his ambassador in Washington as Ukraine moves forward with political and diplomatic changes amid the war with Russia

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenski, dismissed the Ukrainian ambassador to the United States, Olha Stefanishyna, through a decree published this Monday, ending a nearly year-long term at the helm of one of the most important diplomatic representations for Kiev.

Stefanishyna's departure comes at a time of significant changes within the Ukrainian government. In recent weeks, Zelenski has pushed for a reorganization of high-ranking officials that included the replacement of the prime minister and the defense minister. Additionally, a new renewal of diplomatic positions and embassies is expected, in a context marked by the need to maintain international support for Ukraine.

However, Stefanishyna's departure was reportedly not unexpected. Ukrainian media reported that the then-ambassador had communicated to the president last month her intention to leave the position. Her decision is said to have come while facing scrutiny related to long-standing investigations into alleged irregularities in her asset declaration.

Stefanishyna confirmed her departure in a Facebook post and stated that the decision had been personal. She explained that her resignation was motivated by "personal circumstances" and highlighted the results she believes she achieved during her tenure in Washington.

Among her main achievements, she mentioned the strengthening of U.S. arms supplies to Ukraine and the preservation of Washington's support during a period she described as particularly complicated due to changes in the U.S. political climate.

"We pushed for U.S. arms supplies and maintained support just as the political climate in Washington was changing and not in our favor," Stefanishyna stated.

Her statements reflect the importance of her management at a particularly delicate moment for relations between Ukraine and the United States. Washington has been one of the main military and financial backers of Kiev since the beginning of the Russian invasion, making the embassy in the U.S. capital central to diplomatic negotiations and military assistance coordination.

Stefanishyna's departure also occurs as Kiev seeks to adapt its diplomatic strategy to a changing international scenario. The evolution of U.S. policy towards the war in Ukraine has made the relationship with Washington a priority for Zelenski, especially in light of debates about the future of military aid and possible negotiations to end the conflict with Russia.

Stefanishyna also noted that she will later respond to other questions related to the circumstances of her departure that have emerged in the media. Her statements aim to present her departure as a personal decision, although reports about asset investigations have added a political dimension to the change.

For now, Kiev has not officially announced who will take the position of ambassador to the United States. The eventual appointment will be closely watched due to Washington's strategic role for Ukraine and the need to maintain strong diplomatic channels with the U.S. administration.
