The defeat against Spain in the 2026 World Cup final not only marked the end of the dream to win the back-to-back championship for the Argentine National Team, but also exposed the great challenge that lies ahead for the Albiceleste: to initiate a generational renewal after one of the most successful cycles in its history.

After eight years under the leadership of Lionel Scaloni, a cycle in which Argentina won four titles and which could come to an end in December once his contract is finished, the squad will inevitably enter a process of change.

Argentina will have to undergo a new process of generational renewal
Argentina will have to undergo a new process of generational renewal

Unlike the deep renewal that the coaching staff carried out between Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022, the core of the team remained practically the same for the 2026 World Cup. Only nine players changed from the list that competed in the previous World Cup, a continuity that allowed maintaining the competitive level, but now presents a challenge for the future.

If we project the squad towards the 2030 World Cup, the outlook is clear: 20 of the 26 called-up players will be over 30 years old and eight of them will be over 35. Among the older players are several of the key figures from the most successful generation in the history of the National Team. Nicolás Otamendi has already confirmed that he will retire from the Albiceleste after the 2026 World Cup, while Lionel Messi has also indicated that this was his last World Cup, although his future with the national team remains a mystery. In the hypothetical case of playing, the Flea would be 42 years old for the next edition.

In case he wants to play, Messi would arrive at the 2030 World Cup at 42 years old

Others who are key to the cycle include Emiliano Martínez, Rodrigo De Paul, Leandro Paredes, Nicolás Tagliafico, Gerónimo Rulli, and Juan Musso, who would reach 2030 at an age that makes it very difficult to imagine their presence in another World Cup.

The change will also affect other important players from the cycle. Giovani Lo Celso will be 34 years old, while Lautaro Martínez, Cristian Romero, Lisandro Martínez, Nahuel Molina, Nicolás González, and Gonzalo Montiel will be over 32. Even Julián Álvarez will be 30 years old for the next World Cup.

On the other hand, the foundation of the future is already starting to emerge. Enzo Fernández and Thiago Almada, two of the world champions in Qatar 2022, will still be under 30 years old, while Nicolás Paz, Valentín Barco, and Giuliano Simeone are among the players expected to take on a greater role in the upcoming process.

Regardless of the names that remain, the main challenge for the coaching staff will be to find a new generation capable of maintaining the competitive level left by a historic generation, whose farewell began to be written after the final lost to Spain.

The ages of the current players of the Argentine National Team in the 2030 World Cup

    • Lionel Messi: 42 years old (43 at the end of the World Cup)

    • Nicolás Otamendi: 42 years old (has already announced his retirement from the National Team)
