Milei separates two ideas that for decades seemed inseparable in Argentina: defending the claim does not mean endorsing violence

There are injustices that the passage of time does not turn into just ones. Permanence can make them habitual, incorporate them into the landscape, and even convince entire generations that what exists must necessarily be legitimate. But time does not transform an original aggression into a right. If that were the case, it would be enough to preserve for a sufficient time that which was obtained by force to turn any conquest into property.

The Malvinas issue forces us to think precisely about that problem. Javier Milei reaffirmed Argentina's right over the islands, described the controversy as a colonial situation, and stated that a peaceful solution must be reached through dialogue with the United Kingdom. He also announced diplomatic, economic, judicial, and legal measures in response to unilateral activities related to resource exploitation in the area.

Behind the claim lies a deeper issue. Recognizing a historical injustice does not mean accepting any means to repair it. This distinction allows us to understand how someone deeply committed to individual freedom can question a territorial occupation while simultaneously rejecting war as a mechanism to reverse it.

Murray Rothbard offers an interesting key. Existing political borders do not acquire moral legitimacy simply because they appear drawn on a map. Many were born from wars, conquests, and confiscations. Considering every territorial status quo sacred would imply accepting that a successful aggression creates rights simply because no one managed to reverse it.

The issue becomes even clearer when we stop thinking of territory as an abstraction and start thinking of it from the perspective of property. In a free society, a legitimate border would ultimately be the sum of countless boundaries between properties and voluntary communities. What matters is not which state manages to color a surface on a map, but what rights existed before someone modified them by force.

From that perspective, rejecting imperialism does not require embracing statist nationalism. A power that occupies a territory by force does not make that situation legitimate simply by maintaining it for generations. Libertarianism does not require blessing the historical results of conquest. It precisely requires asking what rights were violated before accepting the existing order as legitimate.

But that same logic imposes a fundamental limit. If a past aggression does not create rights, it cannot be used to justify a present aggression against innocents. The right to repair an injustice does not include the right to produce another. There lies the enormous difference between asserting the legitimacy of a claim and asserting the legitimacy of any mechanism to satisfy it.

That is why it is relevant that Milei insists simultaneously on Malvinas and on a peaceful claim. His position avoids a false alternative that has contaminated the Argentine discussion for too long. It is not necessary to choose between forgetting the occupation and romanticizing war. One can maintain the historical claim while deliberately discarding war as a strategy to resolve it.

This requires replacing war as an instrument of recovery with a long-term strategy based on prosperity, diplomacy, deterrence capability, and international relevance. Milei does not propose to do without military power. On the contrary, he argues that Argentina must be politically relevant, economically influential, and militarily respectable. The difference lies in the use of that power.

Prosperity, then, ceases to be merely a domestic issue. A country that accumulates capital, attracts investments, and recovers economic capacity also increases its negotiating power. International influence does not arise solely from vehement speeches, but from ensuring that one's own cooperation has value for others and that violating one's own interests has costs.

The experience of 1982 should have left a definitive lesson. A cause considered just does not make any means employed in its name just. The war produced Argentine and British deaths without resolving the controversy, which the government itself now recognizes as pending and proposes to address peacefully.

In this way, Milei introduces an interesting inversion of the logic with which Malvinas has often been thought about. Instead of believing that sovereignist rhetoric can compensate for economic weakness, he proposes to build a prosperous Argentina to strengthen its position over the islands. Not to abandon the claim, but to change the source of the power with which it is upheld.

Because perhaps the most serious way to defend a cause is not to be willing to die again for it but to build a country so free, prosperous, relevant, and respected that it can defend its interests without needing another war to be heard.
