Google and Volvo announced at I/O that the AI assistant will be able to access the external cameras of the EX60 SUV to interpret the environment and assist drivers with complicated signs.

Google and Volvo presented a new integration that gives Gemini "sight" and mobility. During the I/O conference, they announced that the artificial intelligence assistant will be able to use the external cameras of the upcoming EX60 SUV to interpret the environment and explain it to the vehicle's owners.

This feature is possible because Volvo uses Google's Android Automotive system as the car's operating system. In this way, Gemini will be able to analyze parking signs and other elements of the road in real time.

One of the first practical uses will be asking the assistant to translate or explain difficult-to-understand parking signs. If you receive a ticket, you can blame the AI, although Google warns that the system still needs extensive testing to ensure accuracy.

According to the company, Gemini will not be limited to just signs: in the future, it could remember route signs, interpret lane markings, or answer questions about nearby places such as monuments or restaurants.

The assistant will be able to inform how long you can stay in a specific place, whether a special permit is needed, and other restrictions. “In the future, Gemini will make your driving more useful by allowing you to learn more about your environment while on the road,” said Patrick Brady, vice president of Android Automotive at Google.

This capability does not solely depend on Gemini. It also leverages the computing power of the EX60's Qualcomm Snapdragon and the vehicle's over-the-air updates. Google clarified that it is not Nvidia hardware, but rather the Snapdragon platform.

For those living in cities like New York, where parking signs are famous for their complexity, this tool could be really useful. However, there are also risks: if the AI misinterprets a sign, it could lead to expensive fines or even vehicle impoundment.

That’s why Google insists that the success of the feature will depend on real-world testing. Users will always have the option to deactivate it if they do not trust its results.

Improvements in Google Maps

With access to external cameras, Google Maps will also gain accuracy. Volvo will be one of the first brands to receive the new immersive navigation, which displays routes in 3D with more realistic graphics.

Directions will be more conversational and will take into account nearby landmarks. For example, instead of a generic command, it might say, “pass this traffic light and turn left at the library.”

This integration marks another step in the union between artificial intelligence and connected cars. Although it still raises concerns about privacy and accuracy, it promises to make the driving experience more intuitive and assisted.

Drivers testing the EX60 will be able to decide whether to let an AI "look" through the car's cameras or prefer to maintain traditional control. For now, the proposal from Google and Volvo aims to simplify everyday tasks like parking in complicated areas.
