Argentine sports journalism is in mourning. After being hospitalized at the Zabala Clinic, Julio Ricardo died this Monday at 87 years old. His death is in addition to the recent losses of emblematic figures such as Marcelo Araujo and Ernesto Cherquis Bialo, marking

the end of an era in the media.

Born in Buenos Aires in 1939, Julio Ricardo López Batista began his career in Graphic News in 1957 and quickly established himself as one of the most respected voices in the country. For more than six decades, he worked as a commentator, chronicler and analyst in radio and television, with visits to Channel 9, 11 and 13, as well as Radio Colonia, Radio Nacional and Radio Rivadavia

His sober style, his precision in language and his analytical capacity made him a reference.

He was a commentator on historical broadcasts with figures such as José María Muñoz, Víctor Hugo Morales, Luis Elías Sojit and Marcelo Araujo, in addition to being part of the Football for All cycle between 2009 and 2013.

Son of journalist José López Pájaro, founder of the Sports Journalists Circle and director of the magazine La Cancha, he grew up in an environment with a strong intellectual imprint that marked his way of understanding the profession. “There was an environment of intellectual diversity that marked me forever,” he recalled.

.

One of the most shocking episodes he experienced was in 1963, when he witnessed Juan Gálvez's fatal accident at the Vuelta de Olavarría. Ricardo participated in the rescue of the pilot's body, an experience that years later he defined as one of the toughest in his career

.

In the 90s, he also left his mark on television with the program Tribuna Caliente, together with Antonio Carrizo and Guillermo Nimo, and had a brief stint in public administration as director of ATC in 1990, during the administration of Carlos Menem, a position he resigned a few months later due to political differences.

More recently, in November 2024, he had been recognized as a prominent personality in sports journalism by the Buenos Aires Legislature. At that event, he highlighted the value of sport as a tool of union: “It is sport, which is showing the world that it is possible to live in peace, not to live in war or in cracks permanently. That day was exceptional,” he said, recalling the celebrations for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar

.

With a career marked by professionalism, respect and vocation, Julio Ricardo left an indelible mark on Argentine journalism and on several generations of communicators.
