Milei explained his strategy for the Malvinas and denied any electoral calculations: “It’s a huge stupidity”

President Javier Milei rejected on Wednesday that the recent measures promoted by his Government regarding the Falkland Islands respond to an electoral strategy and assured that the Executive has been working on the issue for three years. He also explained that the statements made by Donald Trump about a possible review of the U.S. position acted as a “trigger” to accelerate the announcements.

“Political analysts say we are pushing for the Falklands for image and political opportunism. It is a huge stupidity,” Milei stated during an interview with Malena de los Ríos on the streaming channel Neura, referring to the interpretations of the national broadcast on September 3.

The president maintained that the decision to deliver that message had been made during a Cabinet meeting the previous Monday and linked the timing chosen as a coincidence with the favorable statements made days earlier by Trump. The U.S. president had indicated that his administration could review Washington's position regarding the sovereignty dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom.

“The broadcast was triggered by Donald Trump's comment about reviewing the position on the Falklands. All exogenous facts,” he explained. The President insisted that the policy towards the archipelago did not arise from an electoral need, but from a strategy developed during his administration. “You have to be very stupid, very foolish, if you think this is an electoral maneuver when it is something we have been nurturing for three years,” he expressed.

The strategy to pressure companies operating illegally

Milei also explained part of the economic strategy that the Government intends to use against companies that develop or plan activities in the Falklands without Argentine authorization.

According to him, Argentina will seek to leverage the growth of its energy and mining projects to force international companies to choose between operating in the archipelago or participating in attractive investments in the Argentine continental territory. “You have to choose between an uncertain project and concrete projects, for example from Vaca Muerta,” said the president, who also mentioned RIGI and the development of the oil, gas, and mining sectors.

For Milei, the change in the international scenario opened an opportunity that the Government decided to seize. “If you add geopolitics, then the window opened and we took advantage of it, but it had no political intent,” he stated.

The head of state also placed the new Argentine strategy within the international geopolitical reconfiguration and strategic alignment with the United States. In this context, he highlighted the country's capacity to become a supplier of food, energy, and minerals and considered that these resources strengthen Argentina's position in future international negotiations.
