The long-awaited rematch between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather has been put on hold. The showdown that was set to revive one of boxing's greatest rivalries will no longer take place on September 19 at the Sphere in Las Vegas, as planned.

From Manila, the Filipino team confirmed the suspension of the event and clarified that the fight cannot take place before early 2027. For now, there is no new official date.

The reasons for the delay include a combination of federal investigations, scheduling issues, and financial stagnation surrounding Mayweather's camp.

Legal conflicts and lawsuits

The promoter CSI Sports Events filed a lawsuit in a federal court in New York to recover $4.6 million that it claims to have paid for exclusive promotional rights to this bout and another exhibition linked to Mike Tyson. This legal situation complicates the entire landscape.

Additionally, Mayweather faces serious charges for allegedly issuing a bounced check to buy a watch at a luxury goods store. Due to these issues, the American will also be unable to participate in the exhibition scheduled for June 27 in Athens against kickboxer Mike Zambidis at the Battle of the Legends event.

These financial and legal hurdles have ultimately stalled the event that generated great anticipation among fans.

History of an iconic rivalry

The story between Pacquiao and Mayweather dates back to 2015, when they faced off for the unified welterweight title in Las Vegas. That night, the American won by unanimous decision in a fight that broke pay-per-view revenue records.

The undefeated Mayweather maintains a perfect record of 50 wins without losses. Meanwhile, Pacquiao returned to the ring in 2025 after retiring in 2021 and recently drew against Mario Barrios in his comeback at the highest level. His current record stands at 62 wins, 3 draws, and 8 losses.

Boxing fans were eagerly awaiting this new chapter, but the obstacles surrounding Mayweather forced a postponement. Financial and legal troubles seem to be the main culprits behind this delay.

From Pacquiao's side, the disappointment is significant, but the team remains hopeful that the fight will materialize later on. The wait will be long, as there is no chance of it happening before early 2027.
