Elon Musk confirmed that by mid-2027 the Austin plant will reduce the production of the van to make room for driverless robotaxis

Tesla begins to say goodbye to one of its most recognizable vehicles Elon Musk announced this Friday, November 6, that the company will gradually reduce the production of the Cybertruck at its plant in Austin, Texas, around mid-2027, to expand the production of the Cybercab, the autonomous robotaxi that is central to its plans

The decision comes after nearly three years of sales of a truck that never met the original commercial expectations. However, Musk did not confirm whether the model will disappear completely or if it could be manufactured at another facility

Elon Musk explained why Tesla will reduce Cybertruck production

“Tesla will be gradually reducing the production of the Cybertruck at Gigafactory Texas around mid-next year to make room for greater production of the Cybercab,” the entrepreneur wrote on X

The Austin factory is, so far, the only known Tesla facility prepared to assemble this stainless steel truck, whose components require specific manufacturing processes

When a user lamented what they considered the end of an era, Musk responded affirmatively, although he clarified that the fleet of already delivered vehicles will continue to operate for a long time

The chief engineer of the project, Wes Morrill, also left a message: “The Cybertruck was an incredible platform for technological development and lives on through the Cybercab”

Sales fell far short of the promise of 250,000 trucks annually

The Cybertruck was unveiled in November 2019 and began reaching its first buyers in late 2023. Musk had projected that Tesla could sell about 250,000 units per year, but actual demand turned out to be considerably lower

According to estimates from Kelley Blue Book cited by Reuters, 38,965 units were sold in the United States during 2024 and 20,237 in 2025, a year-on-year drop of 48%

Tesla also does not break down Cybertruck deliveries in its quarterly reports. In the third quarter of 2026, it reported 8,295 units delivered in the “Other models” category, which also includes other vehicles from the brand. Therefore, that number does not exclusively represent truck sales

Higher prices and multiple recalls

The price was another obstacle for the Cybertruck. During its presentation, Tesla had announced an entry-level version for less than USD 40,000, a figure that did not materialize at the commercial launch

In November 2026, the Premium AWD version was listed from USD 92,490 and the Cyberbeast reached USD 102,490. The Dual Motor AWD option appeared at USD 82,490, although new orders were suspended

Price changes were compounded by quality issues. The truck accumulated eleven recalls since its launch, according to data from the U.S. road safety authority. One of the most significant, in March 2025, affected more than 46,000 vehicles due to the risk of a piece detaching

Cybercab, Tesla's new priority

The industrial space that the Cybertruck would free up will allow for an increase in the production volume of the Cybercab, a two-seater electric vehicle designed to operate without a steering wheel or conventional pedals

Tesla aims to use it in an autonomous transportation network, although its commercial rollout still faces regulatory challenges. In September, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation into the safety certification of the model after its launch in Austin

For now, the company has not announced a detailed timeline for modifying production lines nor confirmed another factory for the Cybertruck. What Musk did anticipate is a change in priorities: less space for the electric truck and more capacity dedicated to autonomous mobility
