At least three people lost their lives during the massive celebrations in Mexico City after the Mexican national team defeated Ecuador 2-0 and advanced to the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup. The match, played at the Estadio Azteca, marked the return of the Mexican team to a knockout stage after 40 years.

According to reports from local health authorities, a 19-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man died from asphyxiation amid the crowd. Hours later, the death of a 48-year-old woman was confirmed due to the same cause. The incidents occurred at the intersection of Hamburgo and Lancaster streets, where paramedics, firefighters, and police attempted to revive the victims without success.

The massive turnout exceeded one million people who flocked to the Reforma area and the historic center. What began as a celebration ended in a painful outcome that overshadowed the euphoria of the victory.

President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her solidarity and announced that the families of the victims would receive official support. For her part, government chief Clara Brugada Molina sent condolences through her social media and called for responsible celebrations.

Violence Amid the Celebration

In addition to the tragedies from asphyxiation, violent incidents were reported. Some Mexican fans clashed with Ecuadorian fans passing by, exchanging blows and insults. They threw cups with drinks, wooden chairs, and other objects, creating a tense atmosphere in the street.

Authorities highlighted that, despite the massive security deployment, it was not possible to completely prevent passion from spilling over into aggression. These episodes sharply contrasted with the festive spirit that prevailed in the Mexican capital.

The victory against La Tri marked an important milestone for Mexican football in this World Cup. The team showed solidity in a key match and ignited the enthusiasm of a nation that eagerly awaited this moment.

The extreme congestion in the most crowded areas contributed to the risky situations that led to the deaths.
