The Trump administration strengthens its offensive against DEI with a million-dollar agreement over discrimination allegations against federal contractors
The accounting and consulting giant Deloitte agreed to pay 21.5 million dollars to the U.S. government to resolve allegations from the Department of Justice (DOJ) related to the continuation of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies in its operations as a federal contractor.
The agreement represents a new advance by the administration of President Donald Trump in its campaign to eliminate labor practices that use race or sex as criteria for hiring, promoting, or assigning employees.
The agreement was announced by the Department of Justice and adds to the measures taken by the Trump administration to require companies receiving federal contracts to comply with anti-discrimination standards. Washington argues that companies cannot use immutable personal characteristics to favor or disadvantage workers and candidates, regardless of whether those practices are presented under the concept of DEI.

Attorney General Todd Blanche defended the government's position and stated that federal contractors cannot reward or penalize their employees based on their race or sex. According to Blanche, calling a practice DEI does not automatically make it legal. The official also warned that the Department of Justice will vigorously pursue contractors that use taxpayer funds to finance what the government considers illegal discrimination.
Deputy Attorney General Stanley E. Woodward Jr. reinforced the administration's argument by pointing out that job opportunities and promotions must be determined by merit and not by race or sex. For the government, the Deloitte case constitutes another example of the strategy aimed at eliminating policies it considers incompatible with the principles of equality before the law.
The DOJ alleged that Deloitte violated the False Claims Act by certifying that it complied with federal anti-discrimination requirements while, according to allegations, maintaining certain initiatives related to DEI. Authorities noted that the allegations cover the period from 2017 to the present.
According to the Department of Justice, Deloitte would have taken into account race and sex in decisions related to hiring, promotions, and personnel assignments. The company also allegedly set demographic goals and developed training and mentoring programs differentiated by racial or sex characteristics.

The government believes that these practices contradict the conditions that federal contractors must meet. The offensive seeks to establish that companies working with Washington must apply labor criteria based on performance and the capabilities of workers, rather than using goals linked to specific demographic categories.
This policy is part of a significant agenda pushed by Trump since his return to the White House. In January 2025, the president signed an executive order aimed at ending "dangerous, degrading, and immoral" preferences based on race and sex. Since then, his administration has intensified efforts to remove DEI policies from federal agencies and companies doing business with the government.
Deloitte, for its part, did not admit responsibility in accepting the agreement. The company stated that it decided to resolve the matter to avoid the costs and distractions associated with prolonged litigation and denied having engaged in the conduct alleged by the government.
The payment of 21.5 million dollars, therefore, does not constitute an admission of guilt by Deloitte. However, for the Trump administration, the agreement represents a strong signal to other contracting companies: receiving public funds implies strict compliance with federal standards and not using DEI programs to justify labor decisions based on race or sex.
