''This oversight not only affected the numbers: it changed who was leading an election. That is unacceptable, and we intend to find out exactly how it happened,'' he added.

The appearance of a memory card with hundreds of votes that had not been included in the official count drastically changed the outcome of a contested legislative election in Georgia. Republican Gerald Greene, who initially trailed Democrat Harry James by 58 votes, took the lead in the race by 262 votes after authorities discovered and uploaded the missing ballots in Seminole County.

The unexpected turn directly affects the balance of power in the state House of Representatives and could reduce the majority that Democrats had achieved in Tuesday's elections to just one seat. The episode also raised questions about the counting and verification procedures, especially after a routine review revealed that hundreds of votes had been left out of the results transmitted to the state.

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, a Republican, announced on Friday the start of an investigation to determine how the error occurred and to establish whether corrective measures are necessary.

According to his office, a discrepancy was detected between the number of votes recorded in Seminole and the results that the county had sent to state authorities during a post-election review. Upon investigating the difference, local officials found a memory card containing 388 votes that had not been uploaded to the results system.

The inclusion of those ballots changed the outcome of the race for District 154, in which James had initially appeared as the winner. After the count was updated, Greene, the incumbent Republican representative, had a lead of 262 votes.

''Georgia's election safeguards are designed to identify discrepancies, and that is exactly what they did,'' Raffensperger stated. The official noted that his office detected a significant difference, alerted county authorities, and discovered that the election results had not been uploaded correctly.

The Secretary of State of Georgia announced the opening of an investigation to determine why that memory card was not counted from the beginning of the count

The investigation will seek to clarify why the memory card was not initially included, who was responsible for the procedure, and whether there were additional failures in the control mechanisms. So far, authorities have not presented evidence that the omission was intentional nor have they attributed responsibility to any political party.

The episode is particularly relevant because Georgia has just experienced a historic political shift. Democrats achieved a majority in the state House for the first time in 22 years, ending the prolonged Republican dominance in that chamber. They also significantly reduced the Republican Party's advantage in the state Senate.

However, the updated result for District 154 threatens to weaken that advance. If Greene maintains his victory and the result is certified, Democrats could end up with a majority of just one seat, which would considerably complicate their ability to push legislative initiatives and maintain discipline within their caucus.

County election officials have until Monday to certify the results. Meanwhile, the state review will need to determine whether the omission was the result of an isolated administrative error or broader deficiencies in the electoral procedures.
