In a surprising judicial move, the accused of executing a CEO would plead guilty this Friday

The New York Post reported this Thursday that the leftist killer Luigi Mangione is expected to plead guilty tomorrow in the federal case he faces for the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO, Brian Thompson, in an attempt to avoid a possible life sentence.

Mangione, 28, is charged with murder in both state and federal court for the cold-blooded killing of powerful health insurance executive Brian Thompson in December 2024 on a sidewalk in Manhattan and faces life in prison if convicted. With this move, the leftist activist hopes that Judge Margaret Garnett will impose a lesser sentence.

Such an agreement could end up weakening or nullifying the parallel case in state court — whose trial is scheduled to begin on September 8 — due to New York's double jeopardy rules, which prohibit trying a person twice for the same crime.

Mangione's guilty plea at this Friday's hearing is not entirely confirmed and his defense could withdraw it at any time. The Manhattan District Attorney's Office could also push to take him to trial if they do not approve the terms of a potential agreement.

Mangione studied at the University of Pennsylvania and is the heir to a wealthy family from Maryland. After shooting Thompson at point-blank range on the streets of New York, he fled for five days before being caught by police at a McDonald's while having breakfast.

Prosecutors claim that Mangione, with leftist ideological tendencies, planned the crime to send a violent political message against health insurers that avoid paying medical coverage to their clients. If his plea agreement is not finalized, he will go to trial in federal court in early 2027.
