This Thursday, the 82nd Ordinary Congress of CONMEBOL was held in Quito with the presence of the president of FIFA, Gianni Infantino, and representatives of the ten South American associations, on a day marked by political definitions, record economic figures and

future projections.

One of the central axes of the event held at the Swissôtel in the Ecuadorian capital was the strong support of the CONMEBOL boss, Alejandro Domínguez, for Infantino in the face of a possible continuity at the helm of FIFA. “Not only do we want you to accept being a candidate for president of FIFA for the next term and for CONMEBOL to be the Federation that shows its support for you, but also today I want to put you in the captain's band. This is a historic moment. Every project needs a good captain, and he is a soccer transformer,” he said.

In this context, Domínguez also refloated the proposal to expand the 2030 World Cup to 64 selections: “What an opportunity life gives us, that under your presidency we can do something that will last forever. Nobody has to forget the celebration and we have a great possibility: that no one will be left out of the 'King Sport' celebration

.”

For his part, Infantino praised South American management and highlighted its link with the region. “I am happy to be in South America, once again, where it all began. Since the last Congress, I have visited six of the ten countries in the region. They always welcome us with exceptional love,” he said.

In addition, he gave a nod to Domínguez: “I think you have to change the slogan Alejandro, instead of 'Believe Big' it should be 'Act Great'”, and remarked that current advances are possible “thanks to exceptional leadership”.

On the economic front, Congress unanimously approved the 2025 Annual Report and Balance Sheet, which showed a surplus of more than 24 million dollars. Revenues reached nearly 560 million and more than 93% was reinvested in the development of South

American football.

In total, CONMEBOL allocated 316,525,000 dollars in prizes and contributions to clubs and national teams, while revenues of more than 567 million are projected for 2026, driven mainly by television rights and sponsorship. Net worth was around 254 million dollars, with total assets close to 596 million and immediate availability in international banks exceeding 386

million.

In addition, the continuity of legal actions related to FIFA Gate was ratified, with the objective of recovering funds affected by acts of corruption. Attorney Claudio Lovera explained: “CONMEBOL is making progress in the development of a complaint in the context of this case, which allows the victim to play a procedural role and make claims to recover resources.” He also warned of new lines of investigation for an estimated damage of 44 million dollars

.

Among other topics, the meeting also highlighted the growth in the organization of tournaments, the increase in prizes and investments in infrastructure in member associations.

With a solid economic present and ambitions for global expansion, CONMEBOL seeks to consolidate its influence in international football, with an eye on the 2030 World Cup and on strengthening its role within FIFA.
