There are decisions that mark the end of a stage, but they also allow us to look back and assess the path taken. After more than two decades defending various goals, David Ospina announced his retirement from professional football through an emotional message on his social media, in which he thanked the sport that marked his life since childhood.
The Colombian goalkeeper chose a letter, accompanied by images of different moments from his career, to communicate the news. From his home and with emotion as the protagonist, he began with a reflection on the meaning of these words: "These are words I dedicate to football, after many days. Words that have not been easy, but filled with gratitude".
In recounting his early years, he remembered the moment he discovered his vocation almost by chance, when on a neighborhood field his teacher asked who wanted to take the goal. "And only I raised my hand. That day, on the neighborhood field, I defined what my life would be; I just didn't know it", he recounted.
With his gloves on, that choice transformed into a career that took him to compete in different countries and stages of world football. However, beyond the sporting achievements, Ospina highlighted the feelings his profession left him and the bond he built with the fans. "I love the smell of the grass in the stadiums. The sigh of the stands as they stifle a goal shout with my hands. And I also love the goal shout for my team. I love the joys we have given to so many people. And I love the sound of my heart beating under the three posts. It’s hard to say goodbye", he expressed.
One of the most personal passages of his farewell was dedicated to his family, whom he recognized as a fundamental support throughout his journey. "Together we played the game of life", he noted, before giving special recognition to his closest loved ones: "Thank you to Jesi, the love that supports me in difficult moments and shares every victory with me. Thank you to my children, Dulce and Maxi, who are my greatest triumph".

In sporting terms, the goalkeeper reviewed the teams that marked his career and highlighted the significance of each experience. "I thank every team that believed in my talent and discipline: (Atlético) Nacional: it is green my debut and farewell. Nice: where I learned that effort has rewards with a different accent. Arsenal: home of legends, and also mine. Napoli: a passion that cannot be explained, it is lived. Al-Nassr: which embraced me with demand and joy. Atlante: which knew how to believe in me", he enumerated.
The Colombian National Team also held a special place in his message. Ospina was one of the references of the generation that represented the country for several years and emphasized the privilege of wearing his nation's jersey. "To the Colombian National Team: what a privilege and immense honor to give everything for my country, to sing with thousands the national anthem", he stated. Additionally, he reflected on what he learned from his position: "Thanks to my profession, I have seen that, from the solitude of the goal, one grows differently. The match and life look different".

Finally, the Colombian explained that his decision does not stem from a lack of will to continue, but from the need to listen to his body and close a chapter. "These words are my farewell letter as a professional footballer. I do not give up, I give thanks. It has been a beautiful journey. The child I was will know how to guide me. You, be calm. I will go where the smile takes me", concluded Ospina, with a phrase that summarizes the feeling with which he chose to say goodbye to the fields.
