The case of Madeleine McCann continues to generate global impact even nearly two decades after her disappearance. Now, a new dramatic documentary based on real events has reignited the debate over one of the most controversial episodes of the investigation: the suspicions that fell on Kate McCann.

Madeleine disappeared in May 2007, when she was just three years old, while vacationing with her family in Praia da Luz, a tourist town in the Portuguese Algarve. The girl vanished from the apartment where she was sleeping with her siblings, and since then, the case has become one of the most media-covered and enigmatic searches in recent history.

The new production aired by Channel 5 begins three months after the investigation started, in a context where the Portuguese police still had no conclusive evidence or detained suspects.

At the beginning of the investigation, many blamed Maddie's mother for her disappearance.

As international pressure grew and the media followed every move in the case, the relationship between investigators and the McCann family began to deteriorate.

The documentary particularly reconstructs the moment when Kate McCann is summoned to a meeting with the Portuguese police that quickly shifts from a cordial tone to a harsh interrogation.

As the production shows, when Kate asks why she was being treated hostilely, the investigators directly respond that they no longer believe her version of events.

The film dramatizes official statements, case records, and real testimonies to recreate how suspicions unexpectedly began to turn towards Madeleine's own parents.

In this context, the public support that the family had initially received began to transform into intense media scrutiny, especially after the leak of supposed forensic evidence that, it was reported at the time, could implicate the McCanns.

The documentary also revives one of the most delicate moments of the entire investigation: the eleven hours of interrogation that Kate McCann faced before the Portuguese police.

After that extensive statement, the authorities informed her that she would be declared “arguida”, a legal status used in Portugal to formally designate a person under suspicion in a criminal case.

As the production reconstructs, during the interrogation, the investigators allegedly pressured Kate to confess to an alleged responsibility in her daughter's death, under the threat of facing criminal charges.
