The socialist included Buenos Aires alongside Washington, Tel Aviv, and Moscow in a warning about the future of Europe

The socialist president of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, made a striking statement on Monday during a speech in Barcelona, where he included Argentina in a list alongside the United States, Russia, and Israel, warning about the influence of foreign leaders on European politics. The reference to Buenos Aires, indirectly aimed at President Javier Milei, places the country among the international actors that the Spanish leader himself considers relevant for the political future of the continent.

The statement took place during the international forum World in Progress, held in Barcelona, where the socialist leader questioned the rise of right-wing movements in Europe and warned about their international links. In that context, Sánchez asserted that there are political forces subjected to foreign interests and defended the need to prevent these organizations from contributing to the end of socialism in Europe.

Pedro Sánchez positioned the influence of Milei's Argentina at the level of the world's great powers

"Spain is governed from Spain, not from Washington, not from Tel Aviv, certainly not from Moscow or Buenos Aires", stated the Spanish president. With this phrase, Sánchez placed the Argentine capital in the same list as the main power centers of the United States, Israel, and Russia, countries that hold prominent positions in the international geopolitical landscape.

Although Sánchez aimed to question the political influence of leaders like Milei, his own statement ended up attributing to Buenos Aires a place among the cities from which there is the capacity to influence the course of Europe.

The European left is faltering and recognizes the growth of the international right.
The European left is faltering and recognizes the growth of the international right.

The statements were made, moreover, on the eve of the XXX Ibero-American Summit, scheduled for November 4 and 5 in Madrid, where Sánchez and Milei will meet. Both leaders have profound political and ideological differences, which have been exposed in previous public statements and international meetings.

Sánchez's choice of words revealed his political fears and an evident discursive contradiction: in attempting to warn about Milei's international influence and defend the strength of European socialism, he ended up placing Argentina alongside the major world powers, implicitly acknowledging its prominence in the international political arena.
