The Argentine sport has added a new golden page in the 2026 Dakar Youth Olympic Games. At the start of the official competitions in Senegal, Cecilia Dieleke climbed to the top of the podium in the 200-meter backstroke and achieved a historic medal for national swimming. At just 17 years old, the Buenos Aires native dominated the final from start to finish, set a new Argentine and South American record, and became the first Argentine swimmer to win gold in an Olympic competition.
The representative of the German Gymnastics Society of Villa Ballester (SAGVB) completed the event in 2:10.05 and outpaced her main rivals by more than five seconds. The Greek Eirini Zervou took the silver medal with a time of 2:15.52, while the Israeli Ofir Simcha completed the podium with 2:17.44.
Dieleke marked differences from the first meters. She passed the 50 meters in 30.60 seconds, reached the half of the race in 1:03.86, and arrived at the 150 with a split of 1:37.09. In the final stretch, she maintained the pace and touched the wall with a time that surpassed the Argentine and South American record of 2:10.36 by 31 hundredths, which belonged to Malena Santillán since August 11, 2025, and her personal best of 2:11.08 achieved on May 8 of this year.
The Argentine's performance was not a surprise. During the qualifiers, she had achieved the best time among all participants, with 2:13.73, and advanced to the final as one of the main contenders. Hours later, she confirmed her favoritism with a resounding victory that allowed her to open the golden medal count for the national delegation in Dakar.
