Healey accused the government of not adequately funding the armed forces and warned of risks to national security

The resignation of British Defense Minister, John Healey, triggered a severe political crisis on Thursday in the government of socialist Prime Minister Keir Starmer and raised new questions about the United Kingdom's ability to strengthen its armed forces in light of the deteriorating international landscape.

Healey submitted his resignation after months of tense negotiations with Starmer and Finance Minister Rachel Reeves, over the level of resources allocated to national defense. In a strong letter addressed to the head of government, the now former minister accused the Executive of failing to provide the necessary funding to adequately protect the country from growing threats from Russia, the Middle East, and other strategic regions.

''The nation needs resources to defend itself and you have not been able, nor has the Treasury been willing, to commit those funds,'' Healey wrote in a public critique that exposed the deep divisions within the Labour cabinet.

The resignation came after discussions about the future ''Defense Investment Plan'' had stalled for months. The document, which was supposed to have been presented last year, aimed to establish a roadmap to modernize the British armed forces and prepare them for potential high-intensity conflict scenarios. However, budgetary disagreements prevented consensus.

The political blow to Starmer worsened just hours later when another member of the Ministry of Defense, Deputy Minister Al Carns, also submitted his resignation. Carns stated that the government's planned spending ''is not designed for the threat we face,'' a declaration that reinforced the criticisms made by Healey.

In light of the crisis, Starmer appointed then-Security Minister Dan Jarvis as the new Secretary of Defense. However, the leadership change did not quell doubts about the government's national security strategy nor prevent further criticism from within the Labour Party.

Healey was considered one of the most respected figures in the cabinet and had extensive experience in defense and security matters. He had previously served in the governments of Tony Blair and Gordon Brown and maintained a good relationship with both military high command and the British defense industry. His departure was interpreted by numerous analysts as a warning sign about the direction the government is taking.

The dispute mainly revolves around the pace of military spending increases. Starmer has promised to raise defense investment to 3% of gross domestic product during the next Parliament, presenting this commitment as the largest sustained increase since the Cold War. However, Healey argued that the actual plans presented to him would only raise spending to 2.68% by 2030, a figure he deemed insufficient to meet current strategic challenges.

The former minister argued that the armed forces need greater resources to strengthen their presence in the Arctic, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe, in addition to accelerating modernization programs and increasing their rapid deployment capacity.

Concerns about British military readiness have increased in recent months. In March, the UK faced criticism after failing to immediately deploy an advanced warship to Cyprus following an Iranian-manufactured drone attack on a British airbase on the island. Experts cited the episode as a demonstration of the operational limitations resulting from years of budgetary constraints.

The controversy also unfolds against a backdrop of transformation in the European security balance. With the United States gradually reducing part of its traditional role as a guarantor of continental defense, European countries are facing increasing pressure to take on greater military responsibilities. Germany, for example, plans to raise its defense spending to 3.7% of its GDP by 2030, significantly surpassing British targets.

Healey's departure also represents a new setback for Starmer, whose authority was already highly damaged following the resignation last month of Health Minister Wes Streeting and after the poor results obtained by the Labour Party in the May local elections.

Several Labour lawmakers described the resignation of the Defense Minister as a ''devastating blow'' to the Prime Minister. Some even warned that it could trigger new internal movements to question his leadership.

With less than a month until a major NATO summit, Healey's resignation leaves the British government facing not only a domestic political crisis but also growing doubts about the country's ability to meet its defense commitments in an increasingly unstable international environment.
